Hi all! Been a hot minute since I crawled out of my Zoomer Discord hole to engage with the gang over here. There's a bunch of things I want to talk about / shill, but for now I just want to focus on one pressing issue: what the heck happened to Raven's Garage, the mightiest Bubblegum Crisis fansite of them all?

I ask because back in January Skuse was announcing the site's 30th anniversary, remarking that he was now a 60-year-old man, and that he still wanted things to talk about, so email him etc etc etc. I did actually try to do this and the email didn't go through, I don't know what happened. And now the site appears to be... down? Like there's a page but it's not a real page, it's this weird 'index of' thing and then dumps anyone who clicks on the sole link buried in it to a 403 error.

So it's not that Skuse gave up on the site, I presume, unless his entire take on Raven's Garage switched between January and now and he now wishes for his work to be consigned to the void eternal. Does anyone know what happened? Am I missing something? I know plenty of people on the BGC Discord would like to see the site either revived or archived.

I know, I know, you're thinking 'we had an old BGC Discord? What will they think of next?' Well... we did.

A bit ago the admin accidentally got his account hacked, and DM'd me demanding I set up a new server. He scuttled the old one about 45 minutes after that, and I tried to bring as many of that server's regulars on board, but as-is our numbers are a little slim. So I'm asking you all if, as fans of Crisis, you would like to join. The old server was good fun, it was where a lot of younger fanfiction writers (such as myself) cut their teeth on the franchise, so I'm hoping to maintain that spirit. Bridge generations and whatnot.

Here's the invite. It does not expire.
(And yes, I did check with Bob before I did this, don't worry about it...)

Thanks to being the biggest and first commonly available part of Drunkard's Walk BGC has a special place for a lot of the people on these boards, so I figured I'd mention this here - the new Transformers Earthspark toy being sold under the name "Prowl" is actually a repainted Bumblebee Cyberverse Adventures Hot Rod, which means it's got almost the exact profile of the ADP car Leon an Daley drive in the early episodes (It gets wrecked by the Griffon IIRC, and the replacements are far more econobox.)

So, while it's more white with blue quarter-panels than the on-screen blue with white below a "belly line" and of course has Aurtobot logos instead of ADP, it is at least plausibly close, to the point it can do double duty as a BGC toy on your desk, and who'd have expected that after all this time?
Earthspark, like BBCA before it, is a "semi-budget" subline, but this was one of the better BBCA molds so it can still stand up with the average War For Cybertron (Siege|Earthrise|Kingdom) or TF Legacy (adjectiveless|Evo|United) Deluxe despite the lower price point, so at $20 MSRP he's already a good deal and if you find him for less I'd call it a priority buy if you're thinking about getting toys at all.

AIC Rights, the holding company with the rights to BGC, now has 'joint ownership' of the IP with anime megajuggernaut Toei.

- Joint ownership my ass. AIC hasn't had the money to do anything but half-assed Tenchi since 2015. This is Toei basically buying the IPs they wanted (Tenchi, Megazone, Zeorymer, BGC).

- They didn't take everything. El-Hazard was part of an AIC crowdfunding proposition, maybe a reboot could slosh around in the Big Isekai Money Pool for a time - but they didn't take that. Then again, more money probably went to the Megazone continuation than that, and they bought Megazone, so I assume they grabbed these IP's explicitly with rebooting them in mind. I doubt AIC is really in a position to negotiate terms and demand they take joint ownership of truly stupid properties AIC has, right? (Or maybe they did, Dangaioh is in there for some reason.)

- 2040 began and ended, and was co-produced with the now defunct ADV films, so a continuation of 2040 is out I think (thank GOD). And a continuation of 2032 would be difficult to say the least. Toshimichi Suzuki's dead; Shinji Aramaki's Production IG elite; Kenichi Sonoda's juggling time between running his family candy business and polishing up his Riding Bean OVA; Michie Tomizawa couldn't even be pried out of retirement to re-voice Rei in Sailor Moon Crystal so there's no chance in hell they could get her back for a continuation... and does anyone in Japan actually have any idea how 2032 was supposed to end? Or are those records lost to time, like tears in rain?

-So: Toei has money, has the rights to BGC, probably snatched the rights up with an eye toward an out-and-out threeboot. It's not impossible in light of various cyberpunk anime being planned: Blade Runner Black Lotus, Trigger's CP2077 anime, Ghost in the Shell 2045... but, wait, that last one wasn't actually good.

- Oh god. Given the present state of anime nowadays, the odds are that this hypothetical threeboot could be bad. Think: The last licensed BGC product was that fucking light novel where it rebooted the Sabers as schoolgirls. They could do that, in some blind effort to pursue the popularity of other LN franchises or whatever. Questions about whether cyberpunk is still a good backdrop to chart new worlds in sci-fi are irrelevant, BGC never aspired to that. So it could fail either for slavishly adoring the most boring parts of cyberpunk-y stuff, or for ignoring cyberpunk stuff in favor of, I dunno, doing isekai? Or making Priss a contemporary idoru? Oh god. Love Live Crisis. Love Live Crisis: The Gacha Game.
You know that thing where you pick a distant date in the future, and then you end up living through that time? I think most of the characters of BGC would be in school by now. Incidentally, no Robin Hood translation released this year, afaict.
I'm doing a reread now, again, because I was flying to a conference, only had a phone in my pocket, and I wanted something to read on the plane. It's odd how you notice different things each time you read.

It strikes me as unlikely that a selling a diamond at a pawn shop would net so much money in a place with nanofacs -- then again, DeBeers sounds like a corporate culture that would get along really great in a merger with GENOM.

Moreover, I think what I said recently about reporters in the DW S step seems to apply here too. Maybe they're somehow author surrogates -- a way of asking questions to explore the setting. Bob seems to have one in each setting: Lisa, Yoshi, and Hermione (and to some extent Luna). Each a person who keeps asking questions at the plot until things start making sense. I think it contributes a lot to the realism of the stories, and it shows how much time Bob has thought about how it would be to live in each world.

Like, Hermione lends a lot of strength to the canon of Harry Potter, because she was always there to ask how something really worked, which forced JKR to build a deep consistent world. Although, that seemed to be her thing anyway. Which is what I mean by an author surrogate.

In a few chapters, and the concordance, there's the word "romanji", which is an incorrect spelling of "romaji". I used to spell it that way too, because it's the kind of word you learn early when dealing with Japanese and accidentally apply English morphology rules to it. Japanese would rather just throw the nouns together in a compound than make an adjective form.
In Chapter 5, you have "Fire bees". That should either be "obscured FireBees and buildings" or the more amusing "obscured fire, bees, and buildings"
And just a comment on Chapter 4:
Quote:Yelena Brzezinski. She'd been 25.

A singer and dancer who'd just received her first big break by
getting cast in a production on MegaTokyo's equivalent of
Broadway. It was a revival of a musical that I'd never heard of,
first produced twenty years earlier in 2016. She'd gone to the
Replicants concert with her boyfriend to celebrate getting the
part. The boyfriend was in the hospital, in serious condition
but expected to make it.

She was just cast in Hamilton and was violently killed before her time. Now that's irony.
Reread has been very fun so far, thanks again for writing!
