At stage left, we have Looney Tunes Toons. At stage right we have Babbit.
Alas, I can't figure out a scenario where Babbit has to ask Doug to give him the bird...

Just a fragment... (and let's see if I can make this work)

Rei looked at me curiously as I tucked the blankets around Sana.
We stepped out of the room and he closed the door softly behind
us before he turned to me and asked, "You don't have children,
do you?"

I studied him for a moment, resisting the urge to snatch those
stupid Raybans off his face. "No," I finally said, a bit more
sharply than I'd intended, but then, it was one of the few big
disappointments in my life. "No," I repeated. "My wife and I...
we've tried, but there were, are... complications."

Complications. Ha. That was putting it mildly. Between our
respective mutations, Maggie and I are almost two different
species. And that doesn't even count the Murphy factor of my
field. What little control I can exert over it is dependent on
more free concentration than I normally can muster in those
moments.

Rei nodded slowly. "For what it's worth," he said softly, "I
think you'd make a good father."

I blinked rapidly to hold back the sudden stinging in my eyes.
*Damn,* I thought, *I thought I'd gotten used to all that.*
"Thanks," I managed to reply without my voice breaking too badly.
"Thanks." I gave up and wiped at my eyes with the back of my
hand. "I love her like she's my own, you understand? Because I
don't..."

Rei clasped my shoulder. "I understand. I feel the same way."

We stood that way for a moment -- two frequent antagonists,
united briefly in their shared paternal feelings for a twelve-
year-old hyperactive fireball with a motormouth. Finally, I
quirked a tiny smile. "C'mon. We've got to find Mama."

He returned the smile with a sharp nod. "Right."

You know, having finished reading TokyoPop's Kodocha manga (haven't finished the anime because I can't find the anime. Grr. Darnit), a good point to insert Doug the Bodyguard would be just after or just before Sana's attack by Naozumi's crazed fans. It'd make sense that Rei would want more protection for Sana after that incident.
But how would that effect the rest of the series? After all, it's a big deal that Hayama goes alone to find the suicidal kid and would Doug leave Sana's side as she is his principal?
But that doesn't stop Doug from surrepitously healing Hayama of his nerve damage. So that could be the point in which the series diverges. What changes would build up as Hayama's father doesn't need to send his family to the U.S. and Sana's emotional break doesn't occur (or does it?)
And so on.
Something to think about.
-murmur
Doug: Hey, what's that!
Hayama: . . .
Doug: Just turn your head and look!
Hayama: Why?
Doug: Um . . . it's a dinosaur!
Hayama: Really?

OK...
As per recomendations I have read the first manga "Kodocha", and may watch the first anime episode or two.
On the basis of reading the manga, I am not sure that I am happy with Doug interacting with that world.
Sure, there are some funny bits (hairdos and chipmunks), but I really don't like the school society shown (reminds me a bit too much of the "fun" I had with bullies in schools, and the seeming inability of anyone to do anything about it).
Also there are overtones in the author's side-panels that set off at least faint alarm bells in my head, to do with where she got her characters from, and how she handles them. It sounds... unhealthy.
I can see what Doug might do, or how he might join the list of adults manipulated by Sana, "for their own good", but I am not sure I am happy with this.
Am I the only one who feels unsure/uncertain about this?
Or, should I invest in a load more therapy sessions! [grin]
Maybe the lack of high tech or magic, or a style of humour that I am happy with, in Sana's world has something to do with it...

This one is so silly that I'm not seriously considering it; if I were, I'd only share it with my prereaders.
Those of you who have actually seen Kodocha will know that many of the characters are aware that they are in an anime: Sana runs into the leader of the band that does the theme song and thanks him for doing a good job, and Babbit frequently makes comments about the show being an anime, as do other characters from time to time.
So the silly idea is something along these lines -- Doug drops right into the "family". Someone makes one of the semi-standard comments about this being only an anime. Doug laughs it off. Meanwhile, in a small infinity of universes, all copies of Kodomo no Omocha are retroactively revised to include an anime version of Doug...
Not a big thing, and probably not even funny except to me. But it was a cute idea.
Something familiar,
Something peculiar,
Something for everyone:
A comedy tonight!
Something appealing,
Something appalling,
Something for everyone:
A comedy tonight!
Nothing with kings, nothing with crowns;
Bring on the lovers, liars and clowns!
Old situations,
New complications,
Nothing portentous or polite;
Tragedy tomorrow,
Comedy tonight!
Something convulsive,
Something repulsive,
Something for everyone:
A comedy tonight!
Something aesthetic,
Something frenetic,
Something for everyone:
A comedy tonight!
Nothing with gods, nothing with fate;
Weighty affairs will just have to wait!
Nothing that's formal,
Nothing that's normal,
No recitations to recite;
Open up the curtain:
Comedy Tonight!
Something erratic,
Something dramatic,
Something for everyone:
A comedy tonight!
Frenzy and frolic,
Strictly symbolic,
Something for everyone:
A comedy tonight!
Something familiar,
Something peculiar,
Something for everybody:
Comedy tonight!
Something that's gaudy,
Something that's bawdy--
Something for everybawdy!
Comedy tonight!
Nothing that's grim.
Nothing that's Greek.
She plays Medea later this week.
Stunning surprises!
Cunning disguises!
Hundreds of actors out of sight!
Pantaloons and tunics!
Courtesans and eunuchs!
Funerals and chases!
Baritones and basses!
Panderers!
Philanderers!
Cupidity!
Timidity!
Mistakes!
Fakes!
Rhymes!
Crimes!
Tumblers!
Grumblers!
Bumblers!
Fumblers!
No royal curse, no Trojan horse,
And a happy ending, of course!
Goodness and badness,
Panic is madness --
This time it all turns out all right!
Tragedy tomorrow,
Comedy tonight!

A youngish fellow who seemed to be doing the "man-in-black" thing
(black suit and tie, white shirt, Ray-bans) came running up to
us. "Sana-chan," he panted, "are you all right?"

"I'm okay, Ray," (Or maybe Rei -- I couldn't tell through the
glasses if he were Japanese or not. If it even mattered.) Sana
was chattering at full tilt again. "Doug here saved me, he's a
martial artist like me, did you see him? Doug, this is Ray, he's
my lover and my pimp!"

As I stared at Sana, my arm shot out to grab the guy by the knot
of his tie. Without looking at him I dragged his face to mine
and said, with that certain soft menace I reserve for truly
special occasions, "You have exactly 20 seconds to explain that
in terms that don't result in your hospitalization."

(Edited 12/1/09 to fix wrap.)
