RIP Pierre Nkurunziza, President of Burundi.
Heart attack, two months before the end of his term as President.
And
Johnny Mandel, Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer, whose best-known work is possibly the theme from
M*A*S*H.
But I am young enough I remember him better from 20/20.
...
well. Is it a cool coincidence? or a creepy one?
The only tiny consolation about these last several deaths, perhaps especially Downs and Morricone, is that they don't fall into the category of "taken too young." We have literally decades of their work we can reminisce about and, in some cases, play and savor again. I anticipate marathoning Morricone's film themes today.
Oh, and I recall Hugh Downs from the puzzle-game show Concentration, even before his time on Today. But then, I also remember, "Good night, Chet." "Good night, David ... and good night, for NBC News."
