Not really, the US armed forces aside from the National Guard need a literal act of congress to deploy inside the US, and the Guard still need a declared emergency and orders from the civilian government. Such orders were delayed or interrupted along with police deployment by politics, which is bad, but acting without them to intervene in the situation would have been a military coup instead of a terrorist action and attempted coup, and could have caused a constitutional crisis. The general who took being asked by (I think?) the DC Mayor, "Why are there no Guardies here by now?" hours later as the necessary orders was stretching it in that regard.

Towards the end of a page, it takes my DESKTOP awhile to load everything, and I've got 2 cores and a cheap RADEON for graphics.

My phone can handle these pages fine. I think y’all need a new computer.

I do remember the days when trying to view images over 2000 pixels wide would segfault the original iPhone browser. Those were the days.

And the most up-to-date version of Firefox doesn't load the images until the post is on the screen - at least, my copy doesn't. Load the "first unread" post instead of the first post on the page, and all the images in the posts before the first unread one don't load unless you scroll up the page.

Same here, though my go-to is reloading the page with CSS turned off. Even less convenient, but I have had troubles with web site scripts before, hence my extreme stance on them now even for trusted sites.

It is still infuriating. It will always be infuriating. It is one of my utter pet hates.

I've banned people for doing it. Well, they were banned for doing it after being asked not to - then going all John Galt when people who didn't have high speed fiber (In 2008 or so) started complaining about it. That fucker had a chip on his shoulder before he got hired as a community manager by the games company the site was a fansite for and was altogether a complete wanker afterwards and spent his entire time shitting on the fansite for not being welcoming to noobs.
