  Research help?
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 09-19-2019, 10:23 AM - Forum: Drunkard's Walk S: Heart of Steel - Replies (20)

Okay, I'm writing a passage for the new and my research fu has failed me.

In episode 6 of the first season of Sailor Moon, Usagi ends up facing down the youma-of-the-week in an amphitheater or arena of some sort where concerts are held.  She gets there after a drive with victim-of-the-week Yusuke Amade.  Now given how often locations like these turned out to be real places or thinly-disguised versions thereof, I'm trying to find a period-accurate amphitheater or arena that I can reference by name.  (I'm currently using the Roppongi Hills Arena, which is a short distance north from Doug's apartment and NW from the market street, but it's an anachronism; construction started on it in 2000.)

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Thinking of adding something to the boards
Posted by: Bob Schroeck - 09-19-2019, 07:41 AM - Forum: Forums - Replies (6)

For nigh unto fifty years, New York Magazine had a feature (curated for most of that time by the late Mary Ann Madden) called simply the "New York Magazine Competition".  It first came to my attention in the 1970s when I stumbled across a paperback with the picture of a pair of immaculately trousered legs sticking out, upside down, from an inkwell on the cover, and the intriguing title Maybe He's Dead.  It was a collection of Competitions and their results.  I bought the book, which I still own, and it remains a favorite to this day.

Basically, Ms Madden would post a challenge that usually encouraged imagination, clever and creative wordplay, and/or a twisted sense of humor. She would get submissions from the magazine's readers, and then post the results a few issues later with a new competition.  To give you an example of what it was like, here's the titular competition from the book, and its winning entry:

From Competition No. 366, “What I Should Have Said / What I Said”:
1. “Look, there’s a lot of traffic, and he’s probably stuck in a meeting all day and didn’t get your message, or he’d have called. I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about.”
2. “Maybe he’s dead.”
—Cynthia Harrison, Rockville, Md.
(There are a few more examples in the article linked from Mary Ann Madden's name above.)

One of my favorites was "The Kangaroo Joke", in which she provided the old joke about a kangaroo going into a bar and getting overcharged for a vodka martini, and then challenged the readers to retell the joke in the style of a famous person. I can still recite the Edgar Allan Poe pastiche which recast the joke as "The Raven".

So, for quite a while now, I've been thinking of creating a "Competition" board, harvesting a few hundred or so of my favorites from Maybe He's Dead and the other Competition books I have, and posting them there once a week or two for the incredibly creative and imaginative denizens of the DW Forums to have their merry way with them.

Would anyone be interested in playing?

...Which is awfully rich coming from Trump, who is supposedly all for State's Rights.  I guess it only applies to the rights that the Republicans favor.

  Cellphones with keyboards?
Posted by: robkelk - 09-17-2019, 08:11 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (5)

My old, old BlackBerry Bold is dying on me, and I have to replace it. But I've been using it because it has a physical keyboard - it seems that half the time touchscreens don't respond to my touch, so a keyboard's a necessity.

I've been lead to believe that BlackBerry got out of the hardware business a while back. Does anyone make a cellphone with a physical keyboard nowadays?

Explosion at virology research center in Russia

This is how we get to live "The Stand" in real life.

The author of the article tries to reassure people that the explosion is unlikely to have released anything dangerous, but Russia's handling of Chernobyl and the recent explosion at a weapons testing facility that released some radioactive material is giving me some concern.

  Technical Advice
Posted by: nocarename - 09-16-2019, 05:52 PM - Forum: General Chatter - Replies (8)

So my hard working desktop of many years has hit the end of its life-cycle. In particular, the motherboard appears to have failed. (No BIOS messages, CD drive will open and shut if I time the button pushes correctly, fans make 'whir' noises as they are supposed to)

If anyone can suggest a current model for purchase in western Canada, that would be great.
I don't mind paying a bit more for capacity, and it would be nice if there is enough capacity that starting up Planetary Annihilation doesn't make the fans sound like the case is preparing for take-off...

CBC opinion column by Anne T. Donahue: To move forward, country music should look back to the Dixie Chicks

It's starts out talking about how country music is aimed at straight white conservative males with so few exceptions that one can count them, then morphs into a request to broaden the fanbase.

But there's a difference between broadening the fanbase and splintering the fanbase...
