Fun (not) with computers, and a tech question |

I had some trouble with my main internet machine this morning... Video was fizzy. That's a known error - the video card occasionally works loose. So I opened up the box and re-seated the video card. Plugging in the computer results in a Fan Error. Have to go to work; check it this evening.
Well, it's this evening. Opened up the box again. Discovered the fan was unplugged. Plugged it back in, turned on the box. Fan Error.
Took a closer look - there are two connectors for the fan cable. Tried plugging the fan into the other connector.
Fan Error.
I'm using my 3D-render PC to connect to the internet right now.
Okay, the old system has served me well over the years - it's still happily running Win2K. Or it was until this morning. Maybe this is Skuld's way of telling me it's time to upgrade. (Not that I can afford a new PC right now, either in time or money - I have a 50th-anniversary party to plan and pay for. And I'm still working on a favour for Bob, using a completely different PC.)
But I had some data on the 2K box that I hadn't yet backed up... including the prizes for the Freebie Challenge I'm hosting this month, so I have a deadline to get the data off the drive.
Which brings me to my question.
The 2K box had a single IDE drive. The box I'm using right now has an IDE controller and a spare bay. Can I take the drive out of the old box and install it in the new box without (a) data loss or (b) OS conflicts?

Helium! (It's only a model.) |

The perfect 3D model for the City of Helium (at least in my opinion) has been created by Herminio Nieves.
Downloading it now, renders ... when I have time - maybe before summer, but don't bet on it unless somebody beats me to it. Don't forget to give credit if you use it somewhere.

At the beginning of every chapter is a selection of quotes related to the theme of the episode. Also, Doug and occasionally others do their own quip/quote drops.
Here's where I think we should put some we all think might be appropriate to join them to help, partly to help Bob from having to brainstorm to much to find suitable ones, partly just for the fun of finding them. Quotes which we just KNOW can in some way be related to Doug or the worlds he interacts with.
~~~
I, for one, already gave a humorously altered Batman movie quote related to the Harry Potter step
"Riddle me this, Riddle me that - who's afraid of the pale emo prat?"
~~~
I watched the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies to celebrate being done with my final exams. Figured I'd make use of that to bring up some excellent quotage from them.
Here's a quote for a chapter in which there exists some blatant example of the corruption in the Ministry of Magic:
“Loyalty is no longer the currency of the realm... I'm afraid that currency is the currency of the realm” – Lord Cutler Beckett, East India Trading Company, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest~~~
And, of course, we all know how Doug feels about fair play in a serious battle:
William Turner: You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement! In a fair fight, I'd kill you!Jack Sparrow: Well, that's not much incentive for me to fight fair then, is it?– Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
~~~
Cause it's just so Doug...
Lord Cutler Beckett: “You’re mad.”Captain Jack Sparrow: “Thank goodness for that, 'cause if I wasn't this would probably never work.”– Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
~~~
For a chapter in which Horcruxes are featured:
“There's never a guarantee of coming back. But passing on, that's dead certain.” – Captain Hector Barbossa, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
~~~
And finally, reflecting Doug's feelings on celestials:
“Not a person, a heathen god! One who delights in cursing men with their wildest dreams, and then revealing them to be hollow, and naught but ash! The world is well rid of her.” – Captain Davy Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Peg and I went to a performance by http://www.youtube.com/user/lindseystomp]Lindsey Stirling in Montclair last night and had a great time. I shot video of her number "Electric Daisy Violin", a YouTube video of which posted here about a year or so back first introduced us to her; when I get a chance I'll put it up on my YouTube account, but due to an abundance of smoke it's rather foggy...
Sensor Tech |
robkelk Wrote:A handheld scanner? Not very much, I'd say. But there are more powerful scanners in the labs.
That gives me a few thoughts about sensors, which I'll post in their own thread so as not to derail this one.
And here's that thread, spun off from "[Story][Season 2] Interview." This is more "add to existing wisdom" than "create new wisdom"... and kibitzing is encouraged.
Season 2:
Considering Fenspace has been a recognizable entity for a decade by this point, and considering that (most of) the Mads tend to share their work, I would suspect most base scanner technology is uniform across space. However, scanners/sensors built by particular factions, companies, or other organizations will have different specializations.
Thus, everybody who does astronomical or astrophysical research wants FedFen or Artemis sensors, while biophysicists prefer scanners made by the Supers, and targeting sensors built by the Warsies are second to none.
Being a business operating in space with a former chief engineer who specializes in explosives work, StellviaCorp has some very, very good high-energy and hull-integrity sensors.
Reverse-engineering of scanners discovered in some Boskonian bases, including Boskone Prime, indicate that somebodyThe usual suspects are Asmodeus Grey and Agatha Clay, but they're the usual suspects for all Bosko-Mad tech. is interested in looking for particular genotypes. "Why" is still a matter of debate - it doesn't seem to affect the results of the various Catgirling Machines.
I know that Doug's not really grabbing from recent stuff, but I ran into these two today, and Doug powers for them just hit me and I wanted to share.
- Kelly Clarkson: Stronger (What doesn't kill you makes you) - inverts wound penalties, disabling effects, and other debuffs for the duration of the song. Additionally, while the song plays, can't be knocked out or otherwise rendered ineffective by anything short of actual death. Carries with it a sort of combat euphoria - he wont' stop dodging or anything, but he's also not going to be paying a whole lot of attention to any additional injuries he takes - after all, they're only making him stronger. Something of a last-ditch song, with a pretty serious downside risk, but if he's in bad enough shape that he's considering using it, it'll make him a heck of a fighter while the music plays (with a good chance of him just dropping when the song stops). Possible side effects of hampering his teamwork and/or extending a weaker form of the effect to any allies he might have (or even to everyone in the area).
- Pitbull/Christina Aguilera: Feel This Moment: Accelerates time for Doug so that the entire song plays out over literally, a moment. In that time, he's basically unable to move, as his mind is assaulted by something like a watered-down version of omniscience. The song also boosts his already impressive intellect - but not enough to actually handle the influx of data. At best, the end fo the song leaves him mentally half wiped-out, with a few useful insights or scraps of pertinent information that he managed to identify and hang on to while he was under, along with some jagged shards of images and datapoints in no particular order and with no particular frame of reference. At worst, it leaves him entirely wiped out, and the jagged shards are all he gets. For obvious reasons he doesn't enjoy the process, and may have concerns about how it fits in with the divinities.
Sadly, both songs were made *less* cool by their respective music videos. Ah, well.
