A self aware entity who's mind is mostly filled with spam and porn?

Not good news.

so it's going to act like a teenager?

on a more serious note I have to be very speculative about anyone that claims the net will generate a level of consciousness.

In part because we have a very tenuous grasp on what consciousness is, and in part part because the net is a combative territory.

Random (or semi-random) neural networks need a consistent level of reinforcement to generate any sort of ordered structure.

To generate a consistent level of reinforcement you need a fairly constant idea about what is good and what is bad.

The problem most people fail to realize is that the net is far more hostile to itself than any neural net.

You have all kinds of factions attempting to control/filter/limit/subvert/spoof a subset of everyone else. These competing and conflicting ideas about what is
'good' and what is 'bad' would hopelessly fuck over any neural net that is attempting to form a general consensus.

Do I think that we are going to have intelligent systems in the next ten years that are going to act like so much like a person that we can't tell the
thing at the other end of the chat screen isn't a person?

Yes

But those systems are going to be the results of concerted efforts like the MIT COG project or Wolfram Alpha's fact engine.

Serial Experiments Lain, anyone?

I know it sounds kinda crazy, but if you ask me that seems to be where this is leading, sans reality-bending weirdness.
