Not only that, it was a contemporary spy thriller for kids, not a period fantasy.

And the movie was made by Cubby Broccoli and the production team behind the Bond films. It starred Gert Fröbe, the guy who played Goldfinger, as Baron Bomburst, and Desmond Llewelyn, best known as "Q", as Bill Coggins. Oh, and one of the spies was also in Casino Royale. So CCBB was pretty much a Bond production end-to-end.
