 You know, the 'USS=warship' thing isn't actually true. It just means the ship is flagged to the US, and is of suitable size. I've heard of cargo ships with the USS prefix, as well. 
Far as I know ONLY commissioned ships of the US navy use the USS prefix. The navy does employ cargo ships however, but most of those should be part of Sealift command. Which uses a different prefix normally.
