Hm. You know, I didn't find this depressing?
Only after I read the comments other folks left, that's when I went...oh. Hn. Yeah, I guess that's kind of bleak.
I suppose it ties into my attitude with regards to character death.
I don't, generally speaking, get particularly attached to fictional characters in and of themselves. After all, they're fictional; they exist to serve a function in the story. Meaning if they get killed off horribly, but that death has a purpose and makes the story better...then it's cool.
Especially if the character dies in a way that does justice to them.
Right. So. What we have here is Naruto sacrificing himself so the Kyuubi can live...I'm not sure whether he did that knowingly, the story's unclear. But certainly, Kyuubi seems to believe he owes Naruto.
And that's what Naruto would do. He's selfless. That's why he's noble, that's why he's a hero.
We already know he'd give his life for his friends, for the people close to him.
But it's an entirely different, an entirely higher level of sacrifice...
...to give your life so your enemy can live.

EDIT: With regards to the writing style, I'm not usually fond of this kind of prose - written in the present tense. But in the case of this story, a certain sense of immediacy and urgency is needed...and so, the way you presented it, I think, is the right way. Kudos.
