I hate to say this, but Ranma 1/2 suggests a way to go on that -- echoed to an extent in OMG, too, and a few other harem anime.
Specifically, these are all quite attractive girls, at least the ones whose names I recognize, and there may probably will be other guys
who're interested in them ... and want to clobber Our Hero into giving them up. Not to mention that, as you hinted in the beginning, getting involved with
a girl who has enemies means Our Hero and the whole harem becomes a target for those enemies....
