O_O;  Never heard of that one before!
And yes, it is a recessive, but it crops up fairly frequently enough amongst the Irish that back in the bad old days it was a mark of Irish parentage.
Heck, I have a bit of Irish somewhere on both side of my family and I get these flaming-red whiskers mixed with with the rest of the dark-chestnut colored ones.  (People mistake my hair for black, but it's really dark-chestnut.  You just don't notice until the sunlight hits it.)
