Folks, I said "as close to the datacentre as possible", not "in the datacentre"...

Generator fire Damaged Server hardware by setting off the buildings previously existing fire suppression system.
Makes me wonder just how cheaply designed the Data center was.
Just for general Safety you put the Generators outside of the building with their own Weather Shell, and FPS.

But what if they host 4X games instead of FPS?

Seriously, what you're describing here is not my experience. The generators go in the same building, but not in or immediately beside beside the datacentre. (The battery backup that keeps the datacentre running for the two-to-three minutes it takes the generators to come online goes right beside the datacentre.) I've never seen a datacentre facility, corporate or government, that had the generator in a separate building.
