The point of building the shitload of missiles is to guarantee that you can launch a second strike, which is really only there to prevent the first strike. I have serious doubts about the Russian ability to carry out a second strike -- especially right now, with half its forces committed to an uncoordinated invasion. The idea is that you expect not all of your missiles will make it, due to being destroyed prior to launch, or in-flight. So you overbuild. Russia overbuilt a lot, but how many of those missiles really actually work? Is it enough to penetrate American air defense? Are there enough people to launch them in time? Would you count on Russian subs being hidden from American overtechnology? Would you see Russia's military coordination as being able to complete a first strike before Americans launched a full-force second strike?
