I automatically extend those phrases when I see them, myself - "It is what it is, and what is it is is bad," "It's in god's hands, and god hates us," "You only live once, might as well end it in a flashy way!" Much like interpreting fanfic summaries with lots of exclamation points (frex Dark!Harry Helpful!Goblins) in the programming sense where they mean "not" this is occasionally over-pessimistic but generally works well for managing expectations.
