I was just going to raise a finger and say, "hey, there are more borders in various places than I remember". Then I saw the second image. I presume that's linked in the alt text?

No, that's Labster's own completion of the image. explainxkcd is leaning toward portmanteau names for the extra fourteen states, based on which actual states they border. (Although I still think the extra one near Maine should be called Secondary.)
