William Poundstone covered this in one of his Big Secrets books all the way back in the 1980s, where he points out that what is called the "cola" flavor is anything but a secret -- every grocery store chain in the world knows a broad-strokes version of the recipe that they use for their house brand soda, after all. It's basically cinnamon, vanilla and citrus at its core -- it's just the exact proportions (and the presence and amounts of extras like sweetener, caffeine and phosphoric acid) that distinguish "authentic Coca-cola" from Pepsi and house brands. And we know thanks to the New Coke debacle that Pepsi (and New Coke) have more citrus in them than original Coke.
