In the meantime I discovered one particular clanger in the plan. Shinkansen gets us to Hakodate tight on the latest check-in time for our hotel - Ryokan can have a latest possible checking time that's surprisingly early - in this case, 7pm. Turns out that's hard to make when you're relying on getting through immigration, getting to the monorail, then booking a train ticket with maybe 10-15 minutes in between, then more trains and busses, and arriving with 6 minutes to spare. 6 uncontrolled connections - at least.
That's a trip with a sphincter factor of 12.
Anyway, AirDo will bring us to an airport about 30 minutes walk from our Ryokan with hours to spare - even with a generous 4-hour wait in Haneda to make 1 uncontrolled connection - and suddenly the JR pass just isn't worth it. Ended up saving 300 quid in total, all added up. Although we miss out on the fancy train tunnel.
It also means we'll be arriving at our first Ryokan 30 hours or so after we've left our front door. And given that one whole side of the airplane seemed to be block-booked out this far in advance, we might be sharing that final flight with a school tour.
