Well, she originally was a male character, "Swom Tift" -- and yes, that's exactly where the name came from. (Oh, and she has a saucer with dog-brained autopilot named Labby -- "Swomi Tift and her flying Labby" )
Anyway, I had made mention that the initial party was gender-imbalanced and Walter took it on himself to change Swom to Swomi, and the rest is history. Or metal shop, depending on your schedule.
