Are police departments still that blase about UFO sightings? Given the wave launchings, I'd have thought they'd at least pay a small shred of attention to odd things in the sky.

The usual wave launching is a Toyota or Hyundai, you realize, probably taking off during the day as most folks are diurnal. And yes, police are blase about UFO reports because they're as likely to be waved stuff as not -- and either way, there's no way a ground-based police force is going to be able to do anything about it. Plus, this is a few years into the US ban on handwavium. No one's seriously expecting anything like this happening on that front.
