I dunno. The being able to do it itself isn't a problem, but I personally would tend to class "specialized strain of handwavium" as a Really Cool Thing - one for each strain. It's a particularly effective form of controlled handwavium effect. I do feel that the memory strain was well enough written, and showed enough in-character investment (both of resources and emotionally) to justify itself. It also strikes me as entirely plausible that the character would then turn around and decide to start growing more of the things. I just think that maybe you should have something that would limit his *success* in the area, or otherwise he's going to wind up with a library of "pick one" handwavium strains that will let him pretty much give upgrade-of-choice on demand.
