Admittedly, if we keep it we ought to move the Slapstick Effect *out* of the glossary, since a) it's a specialized handwavium effect and b) most people
don't read the glossary anyway.
Moving on... on a meta level the weapons lock in general was there just to keep the death-ray arms race from exploding out of control right out of the gate; I
don't recall anybody wanting to run around a Fenspace where any idiot could handwash a toy phaser and get a working copy. As it stands I kind of like
Fenian's idea that the Effect is starting to fade out after n generations of handwavium have been produced. That would seem to be reasonably consistent
with how handwavium works, and it could be seen as a signpost on the way to the Holy Grail of wave engineering. Of course, the Effect should be in full force
when expedient to Plot, just because.
