I'm reminded of part of the conclusion of the Unity storyline of fluffy's busybee webcomic. In which the AI of a generation ship has it go from star to star leaving behind a trail of colonies.
Which is also the basic idea behind the 'Colony Train' in Slow Train to Arcturus by Eric Flint. The 'train' itself didn't slow down, but instead dropped off colony habitats at each star it flew by. Of course the story itself was about aliens noticing the colony ship inbound and sending out a interception party.
In Unity the vessel wasn't originally intended to be a 'colony train', the original colonists treated it as a single use ship, abandoning it to continue drifting on after departing in their landing craft.
But having been designed to support many generations during the slower than light journey the ship survived long enough for intelligent life to evolve among some of the creatures left behind.

Will the transhumanist future have catgirls? Does Japan still exist? Well, there is your answer.
