I'm reminded of part of the conclusion of the Unity storyline of fluffy's busybee webcomic. In which the AI of a generation ship has it go from star to star leaving behind a trail of colonies.
But having been designed to support many generations during the slower than light journey the ship survived long enough for intelligent life to evolve among some of the creatures left behind.
