lol. Is it so wrong to have a Kheldian with blue eyes for a change? And just so you know, there is a person I work with whose name is Rolan, so it's could be as much a reference to him as to Mercedes Lackey's fiction. I would have written more, but my dept took twice as many calls as we usually do today, so I didn't have much in the way of free time after lunch to flesh it out. I just wanted to post what I had before I left work. I'll add a bit more here, hopefully to clear up some things with the story.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
When I stopped falling and finally came around to my senses, I was floating in a sea of white nothingness. I look around but there's nobody there. I thought back to my body for a moment, and was startled by an insistent tug feeling like it's pulling me back. Twisting my arms around far enough so I could touch my back, I felt some faint fibers coming out of my skin and forming into a rope. Turning around, I inspect it in my hands. It's nearly invisible and seemed to stretch off far into the nothingness. "What the..." I wondered.
That is the tether that keeps your soul attached to the body back in the lab. If it breaks or if you ever cut it for any reason, you would never be able to return to your physical being.
I whipped around, still holding the thread in one hand and faced him. He was standing just feet in front of me. I never heard him come, but that's not really surprising considering I still only hear his voice in my mind, not via my ears. I take a good look at him and just stand and stare for a minute. His body seems to be made up of even brighter whiteness than what is surrounding me, and is constantly in motion. Almost as if it can't decide what form to take. One second, it looks like some weird squid creature with tentacles. The next moment, its a giant monster that looks like it has the skin of a rhino Then it went to a bipedal form that is nearly human. And it keeps changing and changing, making it almost impossible to look at him without getting dizzy. The only thing that is constant are the blue eyes. Only now they look like they have white flames coming out from the edges.
"What is going on? What is happening to me?"
Right now we are both spirits, souls, biometric data, whatever you wish to call it. This place is another plane of existence, parallel to the one you are from. For ease of terms, it's an astral plane. Your body is back on the physical plane, you can think of it as 'reality' if you want. My body is on the ethereal plane because it is pure energy at this point. All of these planes literally exist right on top of each other and coexist in the same space, but it's a very few that can take the steps to cross from one to another. Doing that is a specialty of my species, and me in particular.
"Your species? What are you?"
I am a Kheldian. An alien to your world, from across the universe. Our enemies, the Nictus, came to Earth countless years ago. We followed them to keep them from making your world a new homeworld, and to destroy the plague that they are to us.
My brain is having problems processing that much information at once, and none of it was making much sense. I figure maybe I can find out what is going on with me, and deal with whatever the heck he is later on.
"So why am I here?"
Your soul was already partially in this plane. That's why you could think and feel, but not move or react. All I did was pull it the rest of the way into this plane. Except for the tether of course. Despite his constant shifting, his body language manages to convey curiosity for a minute. What I want to know is, what happened to you to put your body and soul in that state of dissonance.
I think hard for a moment. I have asked him a lot of questions, so I guess it's my turn to do the answering for a bit. "I... I don't know."
Well, what do you remember?
"I woke up, laying there. I don't know how long ago, and I don't even know where I was or how I got there. I have no memories before that point."
It usually takes something very traumatic to put a body into that condition. He mused before looking back at me. What is your name?
I blink rather stupidly at him. "My name? Its.... its..." It had never occurred to me before this moment. I never even spared a thought about it in all the thinking I did back in that room. I grew horrified as it finally dawned on me, "I don't know. I don't know what my name is. I don't know who I am."
