I mean, as explanations go, that's... not bad, really. I could paper over the cracks easily enough with my characters, if/when it ever matters. (Rhea's story [for any version] is unlikely to change, for example -- though for giggles I rolled up a truly Evil one this time around).
I could work with that.

That's basically exactly it, yeah.
It allows the greatest amount of keeping what we want, while allowing narrative freedom with stuff you want to change. And it's a nice meta nod to the fact that the universe ceased existing for about 6 years before coming back. :lol
