I am pretty sure "clue" is the same in British and American English.
I don't know about "clew" in American, but I thought your audience was more likely to be up on Greek Mythology,
and the "clew of thread" in the Minotaur legend...
You're right about the etymology, "clue" comes from "clew", says the OE Dictionary.
I suppose "The Art of Clew-do" would still be too obscure...
