I'm not a Girl Genius fan, mostly 'cause I don't like the art...I'm not saying it's bad, it just doesn't click with my aesthetic sense. But the concept of a machine with a soul has always struck me as a fascinating one.
This is doubly so in the City of Heroes/Villains universe, where the question of the soul isn't just academic theology. The existence of a soul can be confirmed scientifically - in the sense that you have repeatable procedures to empirically verify the soul's existence. Nevermind that they're magical. =D
And in that sense, I've always insisted that Obsolete has a soul. How and why is anyone's guess.
I'm not sure how she views the Infamous or her place in it, however. I suspect she never actually joined.
She...probably just simply walked into the base one day and started dusting.
's not like anyone's gonna tell her to leave. After all, she a) keeps the place clean, b) makes an excellent cup of tea, and c) emits enough radiation to melt through the side of a battleship...
I imagine she stays because the group is reasonably nice to her (see point c), and by this point considers her one of 'em. And vice-versa. I think that kind of loose sense of belonging is sufficient for Obsolete. She's alive and self-aware, but not, I think, particularly smart.
