A hard one... Best Ranma fic search
06-17-2009, 02:46 AM
Here we go again. This time, exposure to the OVA's and getting the first two seasons on DVD has put me on to that most acknowledged of anime's,
Ranma 1/2, and given the success of my previous Sailor Moon, Dragonball, Tenchi Muyo et all searches, and given the huge variety of experience and depth of
knowledge of the subject of fanfiction here (and the fact that if anyone'll know the classics it's you guys), I was hoping for some more suggestions?
What in your opinion are the best Ranmaverse stories out there? And to make it easier/difficult, whilst I'd appreciate anything good, a well done
self-insert or place I can find Richard Lawson Ranma stuff? I'll start off with a few for a change.
http://www.fanfiction.net...126458/1/Avatar_One_Half - One of the best self-inserts
I've found for any fandom, namely because of the sheer amount of thought and care put into the character and his abilities and relationships within the
show, and the degree of restraint he shows in the writing and scenario. The SI quickly becomes one of the ones you enjoy watching evolve and end up rooting
for. Includes one completed 80-plus chapteroriginal and two sequels in progress
http://boyscouts1-2.tripod.com/index.html - The Boy Scouts 1/2 Universe - Despite having comparatively
little connection to the original series, a Magic: The Gathering playing Boy Scout took a simple premise (his troupe wins a trip to Jusenkyou), and spins it
out from a few mediocre fan-fics into a surprisingly diverse and multi-faceted universe, with a great deal of supplemental material and three independent fic
series. Made me wish id' been a Boy Scout, or failing that, had a la boritory.
http://www.geocities.com/...o/Dojo/1449/fanfics.html - The 'A Different Viewpoint'
series - Whilst not the best SI I've ever read, the unique premise (An ADULT SI! And he's a normal non-martial arts teacher!) And the crossover
aspects, as well as his presentation of the day-to-day difficulties of how having the curse would affect a relatively normal guy, make it worth a look. Also
noticeable for its length and the degree it involves Kasumi.
http://www.geocities.com/.../Island/9583/archive.htm
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Island/9583/chars.htm - Ranma 1/2 Battle Arena Original
Character Contest - Whilst not the most traditional Fanfic by any means, and despite being something of a deadsite, this one is a kind of fic I've never
encountered before or since. Basically, this guy asked for various authors to submit bios for their own SI/OC characters and a sample piece about them, then
arranged them into a tournament ranking and took a public poll about who would win, and wrote the ensuing fight scenes out based on the results. There's
been one full tournament done and part of another, and I recommend it for the weird characters alone. Whilst there are one or two blatant Mary-sues in there,
there are also some truly inspired characters that could have sprung from Takahashi-Sensei herself and had me searching for the fics that they sprang
from. Examples -
Chen-Shan Chin - A practitioner of Freestyle Fast-Food Martial Arts - the ultimate disgruntled fast-food employee. Neurotic, stressed to within an inch of
snapping and with an arsenal of devious attacks involving greasy mops, condiment hurricanes, hamburger shurikens and the infamous chi-ken attack, this is one
to watch.
Noranov - Member of the Kielowitz Martial Arts Marching Band, Practitioner of Trombitsu - (A sadistic Russian musician turned warrior with no morals, a
superhuman control over her instrument, the ability to kick your ass and play a march simultaneously, and a whole band of fellow sell-outs to back her up.
Hayato Miyauchi - Practitioner of Martial Arts Inversion - An utterly nondescript boy whose art involves reaching a plateau of complete social invisibility,
practitioners of the Art have an area of space around them that they are keenly in tune with. They possess even greater control over the area immediately
around themselves, and actually create a physical repulsion against anyone attempting to approach any closer. A practitioner of the art can be easily
identified in a crowded area by the unusual bubble of space around them that never seems to fill, no matter how crowded the area is (of course, the standard
Martial Arts Introvert tends to avoid crowded areas like the plague)
http://www.sempai.org/~tonbo/fanfiction/ - The Plan - Winner of a Best of Ranma Fanfic Award, this is a
simple but well written and endearing story about Ranma trying out a plan based on one the author's seven year old brother used, and the remarkable ensuing
effect it has on his life. Also has alternate endings and parodies.

Uh...I'm sorry, that didn't parse for me. Though Lawson's stuff is all here. For other recommendations, you can start here -- Schroeck seems to have posted most of his faves. My personal favorite Ranma SI, if we're counting crossovers, is probably Hybrid Theory.
And I stopped reading Avatar One Half about thirty chapters in, after one too many times wondering why I was going through it at all. (Seriously, what's one of us seeing in it that the other isn't?)

*shrugs* - Don't know, could be just about anything. Perhaps it's how dry and rational the protagonist is? I know trying to introduce some kind of
sanity into Ranma 1/2 is kind of going against the defining characteristic of the series, and that could be seen as bad I suppose. Out of curiousity, why
exactly didn't you like it?
And I apologise for my grammer and sentence structure, It was 1or2-ish in the morning my time when I made that post, and it's 3:31 now.

Not a self insert but a must read ranma/rifts fic; Journey
i'll second 'hybrid theory' and on a 'clear day you can see forever'.
E: "Did they... did they just endorse the combination of the JSDF and US Army by showing them as two lesbian lolicons moving in together and holding hands and talking about how 'intimate' they were?"

I guess there didn't seem to be much to it aside from "guy hangs around with the canon characters, scores with Nabiki, and is right about stuff." Any of the other stuff, like the hints at something bigger going on with the insertion itself, or the tattoo, seemed clumsily tacked on. More than anything, I suppose I just found it dull. Mediocre. Plus too much "I'm not a Mary Sue, really!"
The Nabiki bit also gave me an eyeball roll or two, partly because Twisted Path already did it, partly because she's an arse in canon, partly because I suspected she was picked out of mere availability rather than actual suitability.
And a strong second to Destiny's Child, which also has a FanFiction.Net version. That was where I read it, which meant that the ending of chapter 6 came as more of a surprise than it might have if I'd seen the art before.

Anything by Fire is great, it's too bad he stopped writing, and that his site is gone, because those archives for destinies child lack most or all of the
side stories.

Checking the copy of Destiny's Child on my hard drive, I apparently have a 103 KB epilogue saved as well. I've also got eight
chapters of Vengeance and a Half, two chapters of A Terrible Power, three chapters of Deft Touch, and single files for Bubble
Burst (Ranma/Bubblegum Crisis), Mercury's World (Sailor Mercury/The Matrix), Sailor Ranko (the classic Ranma/Sailor Moon crossover.
Complete in a single file), Under a Differing Moon (the only completed chapter of an interesting Sailor Moon AU involving adventure on the high seas),
Red Moon (A funny one-shot with Sailor Moon as a political communist) and The Use of Power (the only completed chapter of a Sailor
Mercury/Wheel of Time crossover).

Shay Guy beat me to listing the rec page on the TV Tropes Wiki -- lots of good links there, and not all of them are mine. I don't have the
time to find more of my favorites right now; I'll try to do it tonight. But until I do, yes, the Wiki page is a good launch point.

Is this a generational gap thing? Did '90s fanfic readers habitually save everything that looked like it might be interesting, before broadband started spreading? Come to think of it, I remember hitting "save web page" a lot more in the late '90s, mostly Mario fansite stuff...
Anyway, the RAAC archives have their own version of Destiny's Child. Possibly Fire's other stuff too, I haven't looked.

I've gotten into the habit of saving stories that I realy like if I think that the page might go away. It has proved a needed precaution when some web
pages go dark.

In my case, I used to share my dialup line with my folks' phone calls. Saving fics was how I could read them if the 'rents needed the phone.

A few good ones that I haven't seen mentioned here:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3939897/1/ - "The Name's Tendo Akane, And I Don't Lose".
Ranma has been in a coma since the Neko-Ken. Akane has been training seriously and is almost at canon-Ranma's level. And canon-Ranma has just made a Wish
on the Nanban Mirror. Oops.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3566724/1/ - "The Dark Lords of Nerima" - Ranma and Ryouga get
mistaken as the latest evil villains... by both the Senshi and the Youma. Oops.
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/220883/1/ - "Martial Artists & Mayhem, Third Edition" - Ranma 1/2
as set in a generic D&D world. The deities are Ascended main cast from other series, including Slayers and Tenchi Muyo. Akane is an acolyte of Ryoko's
church. Kuno fancies himself a Paladin of Tenchi. Oops.

Pretty much, yes. We didn't have archive.org or groups.google.com to give us copies of anything that might disappear back then.
As for fanfic suggestions... Honestly, I'm surprised Ayiekie and Epsilon haven't provided their lists yet. (They're the two who wrote Hybrid Theory, which was mentioned earlier. Although, to keep them from getting seriously swelled egos, I feel obliged to point out they also wrote http://www.bladeandepsilon.com/ranwars.htm]Ran Wars.)
Genma's Daughter and its sequals is another excellent, if completely non-canonical, story arc.
Anybody know where to find Girl Days? My link to it is dead...

Most of the stuff I would recommend has already been recommended. Either here on on the tvtropes page. Saves me from looking up links.

Jamie Wilde?
06-19-2009, 02:35 AM
And I can't believe that no one's mentioned Jamie Wilde's "Ranma Goes to War" and/or "The
Saotome Gambit."
Unfortunately, Jamie's fanfic web site vanished a few years back, and the RAAC archives for his larger stories are almost complete. Gah. The good news is, the Wayback Machine has a pretty complete copy of his page here.
I've never been able to figure out what happened to Wilde. He's still around (his new spec-fic page here has an update from just a few days ago, but no links to his old fiction, and no email address to reach him at), but
seems to have completely stopped communicating with any of his old haunts. What's *really* odd is that a Google of fissionpark.com finds the one chapter
of "The Saffron Agenda" that he posted to the FFML, but there aren't any links to it anywhere on the main page. I even tried emailing his wife
at "The Wilde Home for Wayward Catgirls," but never got any reply.

Thanks all, it's going to take me a while to get through all these, but i'm looking foreward to it. And to chime in, I allways tend to save stuff too,
because of the habit of many pages and stories I love going dark, too.

Bridget and Jamie separated several years ago, and she's since been buried in real life, work and physical issues. I know she's been trying to get her
site up and going again, but it's not a shock she hasn't been able to reply to emails.

I had over 120 3.5" floppies of fanfics stored in ZIP files before I gave up on trying to archive and index everything. And that was just anime fic. I still have many, many megabytes of sorted fics in a directory that I retrieved from my last hard drive before it died. I have stuff dating back to at least 1995, good bad and indifferent.
I'm not doing that quite as obsessively any more, but it still gives me access to a surprising selection of stuff.
