Especially since then Princess Elizabeth Windsor volunteered to serve in the women's auxiliary during WW2, and in the later days of the war served as a homefront army mechanic IIRC.

She served as a driver and mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, yes.

News flash! In a shocking swerve, President Trump made an objectively correct statement when he mentioned the Queen's wartime service. 

Possibly the best reader comment on this came from someone styled mandragola:
