five hundred some Guests, is that unusual?
five hundred some Guests, is that unusual?

I don't keep track of such numbers usually, but that's like four times as many registered users as there are total. Did we get slashdotted or something?

No, we get a lot of what is presumably bot/spammer traffic. Five hundred is pretty normal these days... it's times like back on January 21 when we had 10,068 users on at one time that are excessive. Thank god I don't pay for traffic, just disk space and DB access.

The statistics for the security questions on membership requests are pretty indicative of spambots, I should note. In the nearly ten years the forums have been running on my site, we've had well in excess of 250,000 attempts to register that couldn't get past the questions, which were designed to be easily answerable by anime fans and readers of Drunkard's Walk.

Quote:1,018 users active in the past 15 minutes (1 member, 0 of whom are invisible, and 1,015 guests).

That dropped from 1,025 while I logged in.

And that's on a Sunday morning. I suspect that it won't be long before 500 guests is a slow time for the forums.

Judging by my logs, the spammers are getting desperate. There are only so many online fora, wikis and other sites, but the numbers of the would-be advertisers keep going up. I'm surprised that they aren't turning on each other like starving dogs in a locked kennel.

Oh, and there were just under 900 "guests" when I logged on about an hour ago; now there are just over 700.
