I haven't had a chance to pull the vid off the camera yet. I'll try to do it sometime this afternoon, but I've got a full plate today.

VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/index.html will do the rotation.

WG, Bmull, a little help please? Those two tools don't work together well -- Handbrake only outputs MPEG-4 video in MP4 and MKV containers, and it appears that VirtualDub doesn't know either from Adam, nor can it recognize the .MOV format video straight off the camera. VirtualDub only recognizes MPEG-1 video, AVI/DIVX, and a couple other oddball things like animated GIFs.

So... what's a good program that will convert my .MOV file to something VirtualDub recognizes? I'm googling right now, but if there's something that comes right to mind for either of you, I'll be happy to skip the effort.

Thanks.
ETA:  Let me rephrase that slightly.  It's not hard to find video converters.  But it's hard to tell what's got spyware or worse bundled into it.  Tracking down that kind of info before I download anything is a pain and a half.  If you guys -- or anyone else for that matter -- knows something dependable and honest that will do the job, I'll be happy to take your recommendation.

Wow, I haven't used this program since '06, glad to see it's still around.

This is what I used before I got Handbrake, I remember it being verrah nice.

...have to download that again tonight.

mplayer will do it. mplayer will also do the video rotation if you ask it nicely (well mencoder, which comes with mplayer at any rate). and mplayers input/output support basically amounts to 'yes'.

Catty's right, mencoder will do it.  I normally used ffmpeg to generate the files and forgot all about mencoder.  Here's a link to a site that did rotation on .avi and .mpeg files.  http://www.hanselman.com/blog/HowToRota ... trait.aspx.  You can use mencoder to convert from mov to avi:  http://www.debiantutorials.org/convert-mov-to-avi shows how one person did it.

Okay, before people completely cease to care, I've finally rotated the damned video and posted it to YouTube. Wow, my first YouTube video. I feel so... Web 2.0 all of a sudden.

such a unique sound.

I'd love to have me that tree, though.. fresh cedar, I could carve it and smoke meat with it and use it to make chests and yah.

Tell me about it. There are a couple 3-foot chunks on the curb still, and I've been tempted to tote them into the garage, but I really don't have the tools to work them properly.

It'll take those chunks a few weeks (or months) to dry to the point where they can be worked - plenty of time to find someone who'll lend (or rent) you the tools you don't have.

And you'll have something from "the old cedar tree" to remind you of your lucky break whenever you look at it.

Why not grab them?

Mm. You make a compelling case. If it weren't raining right now, I might do that.

As for reminders, well, one of those logs had a cross-section where the red heartwood resembled a heart. So I sliced that bit off to make some kind of plaque for Peggy.

The tree service just came back and ground out the stumps. I'm sure many of you folks have seen a stump grinder, but for those who haven't... imagine a chainsaw the size of a refrigerator, driving its own jeep.
