Brand new particle discovered?
Brand new particle discovered?

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-13000253]BBC article.

I don't know about you, but I wished they'd confirmed it before announcing. Yes it's exciting and possibly very important, but those are the reasons you need to be VERY sure of your results.

Still, I'm keeping an eye out for this.

I saw this yesterday via a different outlet, and that was my thought exactly -- I wasn't going to post anything about it here until there was some solid confirmation.

they are a little over 3 sigma sure, which means about 1 in 1000 chance that it is just a fluke. related xkcd; http://xkcd.com/882/

They are currently publishing the paper for peer review, but of course the press is in need of a scoop and is already running articles about it before it's properly confirmed. Normally particle physics requires a 5 sigma certainty (there are exceptions, other conditions, etc) but this is still significant enough to merit a paper, if only so that others can confirm it, but it's not significant enough for a headline.

A slightly more technical description, don't worry they break it down into something understandable; http://blogs.uslhc.us/a-h...ng-new-in-wdijets-at-cdf
E: "Did they... did they just endorse the combination of the JSDF and US Army by showing them as two lesbian lolicons moving in together and holding hands and talking about how 'intimate' they were?"
B: "Have you forgotten so soon? They're phasing out Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
