I have been soaked, frozen, starved, ignored, overworked, and treated poorly. I am currently seeking other employment.

So I'm being underpaid. I'm pulling $31.79 as my base rate. According to the union contract, my position and my seniority would be netting me a minimum of $39.03, with a static $2 increment due to on-call status and a fairly consistent $2 for Kenai area work or $1 for Wasilla area work, with double time for anything Sunday (rough guesstimate is 40-80 hours total in this calendar year), and depending on argument, a $2 'lead' increment on many projects. I'm being shorted about $11/hr, more or less.

That's the kicker.. I'm one of like three non-union, non-management positions in the company. I've an interesting job. I am neither fish nor fowl nor good red meat. I'm going to approach the union (plumbers and pipefitters) and see if they want to get this position unionized - but it's kinda outside of their remit (I don't touch gas - full stop).
And no, I'm not going to activate any of the various thermonuclear options until I have a job offer that will keep me in my field (Telecom) and get me a living wage ($20+ rock bottom, I'm asking for $30).

Telecom is one of the industries that's going gang-busters out here. Mostly it has to do with things like the University of Texas at San Antonio finishing out a massive growth spurt in recent years and new business coming to town. (Someone's building a freakin' huge fab plant near where I live. I have no idea what company it is, but the place hasn't gone live yet.)
A short list of companies in town? How about this: USAA, Clear Channel Communications, Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, AT&T, Caterpillar, Toyota, Frost Bank, Chase Bank, Wells Fargo, Nationwide Mutual, Allstate, and Citigroup. Oh, and let's not forget that Rackspace has always been here.
Plus, the city's been growing. Right now, San Antonio is the second-largets city by population in Texas. Pretty sure that used to be Houston only a little bit ago.
I understand that moving's a big deal - I've had my fill of it myself and I'd just like to settle for a bit. But still, food for thought.

Moving BA would depend on a couple of things. Being single would make it easier to move, but if Wire has a girlfriend or has a house, it makes things more difficult. Casting the net wide would not be a bad thing though. Got nothing to loose.

Ayep, we ICT Tech's always wonder on if we'd unioned up, just what one would take us as a member?
I've done install job on unionised building sites and they're not too fussed with me doing a job on their site as long as I prove I've done a OH&S course, but I'm not a member of one of those unions. In conversation with a Sparky I can almost join one of their unions (after doing some electrical trades training). As for Shopfitters....well I know of one who's astounded that a team of two does a job that would take four of his guys to do (one qualified carpenter, sparky & two tradies)....I just imaging him watching me do a deinstall/demolition - stress-relieve time!
WG, a look at the wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ons_in_the_United_States got me thinking, would one of the Postal service unions accept you as a member?

I appreciate the ideas, and I'm implementing a couple of them (widening my search parameters - I added the Mat-Su Bureau and the electric utility onto my 'to apply' list.).
Moving is right out. My father's on the downhill side of his life - I will be here, even if I'm pulling minimum wage flipping burgers.
Postal Service is problematic. The US Postal Service as we know it is not going to be around much longer. Additionally, they tried to kill my father.
If it came down to raw smarts, I could re-train to enter any unionized field with ease. I just don't want to. Comm is the right mix of field work and lack of heavy lifting..
My big hope is that I'll get a job offer or two in hand by the time I return to work (1/1/2012), and be able to have some very interesting meetings.

I don't think I have any contacts in your (geographic) area, though I *might* have a few in your field. Specifically, the company I did contract programming work for a ways back installs and maintains satellite communications systems -- not home satellite, but, microwave uplinks and shit. Is that in the right ballpark?
I can poke Ye Olde Rolodex and see what, if anything, comes up, if you like.

It's alive....
And so, like the persistant chihuaha hopping up and down trying to nab a bite of the sausage dangling over the edge of a particularly high table... I may just have a whiff of something. I'm not sure what I'm doing differently but, going from other silence, to quiet rejection...
Now, in the last two days I've been contacted by two seperate company's I've applied to.
One wants to bring me in for an interview tomorrow for a 9-month long internship/placement I applied for months ago and forgot about.
Another one just contacted me to touch base and talk in person for a few minutes.
Both tried to contact me either when my phone was off (Because I was driving), or disabled (Because I was buying a new one because the last one dropped calls). And both within a day of each other.
Well, either it's a lucky break or a sign of things picking up. but I really amn't sure what I'm doing differently. Because at the same time, the Social Welfare office is wondering why I've been on jobseekers benefit for over a year with no sign of work. Knowing my luck they'll call me when I'm in the interview tomorrow, or on the way to or from it.
