Gryphon is in the Hospital
Gryphon is in the Hospital
#1
Hey guys. I think some of you are readers/fans of the EPU material and Ben "Gryphon" Hutchins.
Maybe you should know that he's had some serious medical issues. I won't detail the whole thing here because Gryph did himself here, and here. I had NO idea of this stuff until just a few days ago myself, as I hadn't been over to the EPU forums in a couple of months. But kind of a shock to hear about.
Well he had his surgery yesterday, and it was dicey. VERY dicey.  Gryphon is out of surgery but he's in a medically induced coma. There were.... complications.
Megazone posted on his FB page here about it.
In part, MZ says:
Quote:All I have are the details his clearly shaken mother relayed to me by phone, but apparently his renal vein tore during the surgery and he had a massive bleed which they had trouble staunching. They had to transfuse a lot of blood and she said he coded and had to be resuscitated twice on the table. They did decide to proceed with the primary objective and removed the kidney, and apparently that went well and they believe they got the entire mass and it doesn't look like the cancer had spread. So at least that is good news.
...
...
I'll pass on further news as I get it. Right now just think positive thoughts. He's not out of the woods yet, but they're going to be keeping a close eye on him in the ICU. Since they stopped the bleed, removed the kidney, and managed to resuscitate him, hopefully he's past the worst of it.
I'd say he and his family/friends could use all the good wishes/prayers/support they can get.
Crossing fingers and hoping for the best.

Hooo boy. I knew I should have been keeping up with EPU.

I'm borrowing all the extra fingers I can to cross them along with mine.

Yeah, definitely *not* how he should die.  Best of luck to the guy- may he live to write for decades to come.

Wow.

I should follow the forums more closely, cause I had no idea about any of this.

He definitely gets my best wishes as well, and here's hoping everything turns out ok.

Gryphon's awake!

Here - I'll just re-post what Zoner said on Gryph's LJ account

Quote:Good news everyone!
Gryph's mom called me again, he had a dramatic turn around overnight. While last night she said they expected to keep him in the induced coma for at least two days, apparently he woke up this morning. It wasn't clear if they deliberately brought him out of it or if he woke up on his own despite the induction, but either way he's awake.
Apparently he woke up and wanted the breathing tube out, which I can understand, I'm sure it isn't comfortable. So they turned off the ventilator first and he did OK on his own, so they did remove the tube. His mom says he's pretty cranky, which isn't really a surprise for those who know him.
They are allowing visitors. He's still in the ICU and it sounds like he'll be there another day or two before they move him to a normal floor. Something like the tower, 8th floor, section C, room 58 if I'm remembering correctly. I'm going to be heading into Boston shortly.

YEEEEEEEESSS!!!!  *FIST PUMP*!!

If he's CRANKY, that's GOOD. Bitching and moaning and whining about shit is one the best possible signs in my book!

I'd like to think that he -surprised- them by waking up before they had him scheduled to, but there's nothing said about that yet so don't make assumptions.

Still - excellent sign!

Why did I read that in Farnsworth's voice?

Best wishes from the far side of the pond.

As somebody who has in fact Been There and Done That, being mildly confused and pissed about the circumstances is a good sign. Means he's got his wits about 'im. I know that when I woke up my first reaction was "what the hell just happened?" and "I want these tubes out RIGHT FUCKING NOW."

Hi. Yeah. Some of us have been on edge like all hell.

For the whole story, you'd want to start here: http://www.eyrie-producti...cs/DCForumID11/1080.html

Then read through the SGR updates.

I was joking with him on Sunday night about he shouldn't worry too hard, I had a necromancer on call in case of worst-case scenario, and his reply was, "I hope they're competent, I don't want to pull an Akio on the UF universe with Author Fiat."Brazil has decided you're cute.

I don't know him, either, but reading his earlier work was one of the things that got me into writing fanfic myself...

I hope he makes a full recovery. Cancer is a nasty way to go.

Well, from what've I've read so far no-ones claimed it to be cancer just that it's likely to be one. Either way the current dice thrown for him weren't all ones this time but some are darn close to the toughness save.

I'd send him a Cortana but I've only just found mine -the Mega bloks blind bag one- perhaps he'd like an Orange Spartan instead?

Everything they've said so far indicates that the cancer never spread anywhere else or had the chance to. They basically caught it EARLY. It was only in/on the kidney, which is now out. But Gryph detailed all this in more/better detail in his EPU forums posts.

From what we understand through limited contact, the kidney appeared to be highly deformed in the manner of having renal cancer. It also did not appear to have infiltrated the blood or lymph systems.

So far, he's been visited by Rat, ReRob and Zoner, and they all say he's in cranky spirits due to pain, but seems much himself.

I slept much better last night than I did the night before.Brazil has decided you're cute.
