I've got a new job
I've got a new job
#1
What the title says.  The commute to MLA has been worse than I thought it would be when I took the job back in June 2011; what with having to take Peggy to her job in the morning too (for those who don't know, it's a long story involving medical reasons for not driving, and train and bus schedules not lining up conveniently), I'm driving about two hours to get to work every morning.  It's grinding me down majorly.  (There are a couple other reasons, but that's the main one.)  So... once I'd given MLA the year my sense of honor required me to, I began looking for a new position.

I had my first real bite early last week, and it turned into an avalanche -- initial phone interview on the road home from work last Thursday night (8/2), a face-to-face interview less than 24 hours later (with supervisor, IT head, and CEO in rapid succession), an offer less than four hours after that, and me accepting (and emailing a scan of the signed offer letter) before 10 PM.  I gave my notice at MLA on Monday, and I start at the new place on the 20th.  The money's the same, but I'll be commuting far less, and spending less on gas and auto maintenance, so my effective take-home will be a bit higher.

Since everyone was so interested in my job search from 2009-11, I just thought I'd let you know.

Congratulation!

Isn't that always the way? Can't get a job until you actually have one. Which reminds me that, now that I'm starting to get settled in here I should probably get searching for actual paid work rather than an internship.

You were seriously driving 1/6 of your day, just for work?
You have my sympathies for that, and my congratulations on the newer job.  Always good to see somebody move up, especially in times like these.

Given that, when I changed jobs, my commute shot up from 1 mile to 15, you have my sympathies, and certainly understandings with regards to needing to find another... and I only spend about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes per day when you factor in both heading to and leaving work.

Of course, my job is moving, and moving closer, later this year, to the effect of slightly more than halving the distance, but not quite the time, since the entire distance removed is pretty much highway, leaving the city streets themselves.

Thanks everyone.

It was only 2 hours in the morning; in the afternoon, I go straight home, which is usually an hour or less depending on the traffic on I-287. In the evenings, the shuttle bus and train schedules align much better for Peggy, so she can just walk out the door of her job, get on the shuttle to the station, and hop on a train usually within 20 minutes; the train ride itself is 10 minutes long, and either she takes a cab to our door, or she calls me just as she gets on the train (it's a 10-minute drive from our house to the station). Evenings are far better -- it's getting into work half-dead that was really ruining the day for me.

And the first day is over, and was a little slow and dull since all I did was paperwork, setting up my machine, setting up my preferences on the various services and utilities and environments, and reviewing the software which processes the data which I will be spending my days watching over, at least until I'm up to speed on it and can branch back out into development again.

There are far worse things than dull and slow, especially for your first day.  Fast-paced and terrifying....
I'm not necessarily talking physical-danger terrifying, either, 'cause I've been lucky enough never to experience that on the job, but "Oh good Lord, did I just say/do THAT in front of my new boss/coworker?" is quite sufficiently frightening, thank you very much.  If you missed out on that experience, say a prayer of thanks ... accept my congratulations ... and knock on wood.
By the way, Rob, looking again at the leader in that line of Conga Rats and noticing the fruit headpiece, I have to ask, "Is that Carmen Mirata?"

Yup, 2 hour round trip to/from work is just on the edge of doable. As for me, I am well on the way of knowing every nook and cranny of North-Central Alabama. They got some interesting town names 'round here parts.

I'll bet they aren't as interesting as the ones in Newfoundland! Spoiler'ed for the under-18 crowd:I get the feeling Newfoundlanders (a) don't care what the rest of the world thinks, and (b) have a lot of free time...

I've always wanted to go to Eromanga, Queensland myself.
I could only really imagine doing a long commute on mass transit, so I could be reading a book or something, instead of doing hours of unpaid time just getting to the job.
