Is apparently better than we thought

Ice has been discovered on Mercury. And it happens to be covered in dark material.

Life on Mercury, perhaps?

It's an 'organic' substance, most likely similar to tar or oil, or similar..... it's probably not 'life' as such, but the building blocks of life.

The 'dark material' could very well be organic compounds carried there by the same things that deposited the ice: comets
More info can be found at a blog (Bad Astronomy) I trust. They have actually found some compelling evidence (it's not proof, but it's about as close as we can get without landing something there) for large amounts of ice on Mercury.

Maybe, maybe not... but http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/messe ... index.html has the same story, and that's the mission's official homepage.

Wasn't the hoax page something along the lines of NASA finding plastic beads on Mars?
