Tech question: Wireless bridges?
Tech question: Wireless bridges?
#1
So, I am moving. The place I'm moving to has wireless internet that I can use, but I have a lot of wired devices.

Well, turns out there's things for that. I'm currently looking at this one, which looks like it will suit my needs and has a good reputation overall. But I thought I'd see if anyone else had advice or suggestions.

I'm at gencon currently. So I'm typing this from my phone and can't do the web trawl nessissary to provide specific model numbers and links.

But I would be highly surprised if you can't get a normal router (for less than the $75 being asked for the device you linked), stick an open source firmware on it*, and configure it to operate in bridge mode.

You should be able together something more versital, for cheaper, and with more ports.

I'm sure someone with more time and better Internet access than me can give you specifics Smile

* this step may not even be nessissary depending on the brand.

No one seems to be speaking up so far...

I did find instructions on how to do what I want with the DD-WRT firmware, and a router with a decent reputation for working with it that I could get from Amazon for $15 or so...

Suggestions would still be welcome though. I've got a couple weeks anyway.

It's possible to set up a windows computer to function as a network bridge as well.

Yeah. I've even done something similar before. But I couldn't do it with my desktop without getting new hardware anyway, and I really don't want to leave my laptop plugged in and running all the freaking time.

You already found the software I was going to mention. I found an article with lots of step by step instructions with pictures, so this might help if you don't already have it.

Also, although the instructions warn you that you might brick your router trying this (so don't use a router you care about in case it doesn't work,) most routers have a dedicated hardware-defined channel you can use to re-flash the bios in case of that kind of accident. You might want to check for the program and default bios for that particular router. That way, if it doesn't work on the first pass, you can use the hardware channel to reset the bios and try again.

That would, in fact, be the exact article I was already looking at.

However, I don't have an old router. In one of the 50* liquor boxes full of stuff that I've already packed up and moved I have my old dsl modem, but I don't think it could actually be made to do the job. Nor am I sure I still have the power adapter for it. Nor do I know *which* of those boxes contains it.

*I counted. Although I may be off by a couple in either direction.

So, I don't really see a path here that doesn't involve buying something, so I'd like to buy something that I've got some reason to think will work fairly well.

It's sounding like dd-wrt is the way to go here, then

now that I have returned from gencon (aka: the land of games and sleep deprivation), I'll chime in with some links.
ddwrt is a great firmware. But it is a little heavy, and may not run the best on some hardware.
Before you click on the buy button, make sure you check out the version of the router you are getting. More recent hardware versions can actually have LESS ram than older versions (it's a way to cut costs) and can limit the functionality of the software you load into it.

and now for the links:
dd-wrt: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index
tomato: http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato (this is what I use)
open-wrt: http://openwrt.org (what ddwrt is based on, more fiddly bits to play with)
