...shouldn't he be Lupin IV by now? It's been at least a generation...

Must say that looks potentially entertaining.

It's like James Bond. He's eternal.
But a good way of addressing that concern would be to make the movie a period piece in the 60s or 70s.
And while I'm at it, I think one good way of making more James Bond movies that are more credible would be to do the same thing. James Bond was created for the 60s (and maybe the 70s), let's make all the James Bond movies into period pieces. X-Men First Class and X-Men DOFP proved you can do credible period pieces for that era.

Logan, Bond was created for/in the 1950s. The books became a big thing in America when JFK mentioned enjoying them in an interview, which led more or less to the films.

Eh - similar logic. You could also do what Batman the Animated series did - invoke the idea of a generalized "Middle of the Last Century" setting with little or no specifics in terms of specific decade mentioned.
Anyway - I think they've at least captured the right feel of Lupin in the trailer. We'll see how well it works as a full film soon.

Well, an idea I've long had (and I've seen it used in at least one fanfic) is that 'James Bond' has become part of the 007 identity.

Actually that idea dates back at least to Woody Allen's Casino Royale, with David Niven playing Sir James Bond, the original, complaining about the "homicidal sex maniac" they've got running around using his name.

Similar to what some comic writers have tried to do with Batman and Captain America (rightly so in some cases, despite the executive meddling that's screwed with good stories). It makes the name more iconic, less associated with one character, and thusly more legendary. I could easily see Craig's 007 delivering a line similar to Westley's in "The Princess Bride":
"Bond had been in the cold for so long, he wanted to retire. So M took me to his office and he told me the secret. 'That is not Special Agent James Bond' he said. 'His name is Steele; he inherited the name from the previous Special Agent James Bond, just as you will inherit it now. The man he inherited it from is not the real Special Agent James Bond either. His name was Ffolkes. And he inherited the name from a fellow named Pettigrew. The real Bond has been retired 40 years and living on a nice pension in Scotland.' "
That being said, it would be easy to say that Lupin the Third is not the grandson of Arsene Lupin, but actually the third man to call himself Lupin.
