Having watched the first 2 episodes, I'd recommend it.  It's interesting to watch Thomas Cromwell in action. You're trying to figure out what is he thinking. He is a man of contradictions. Abused as a kid, yet a great husband and father. Cultured, yet a commoner. Loyal to whom he had pledged his service. And a man who has made a list of those who wronged him and his. "No better friend and no worse enemy" would describe him very well.

This period in history, the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, is not only a time when Christianity is evolving and moving away from the traditional Roman Catholic beliefs, but it is also a time when society is shifting. The middle class is establishing itself, rising out of the artisans and tradesmen that have only relatively recently ceased to be serfs and become freemen and guildsmen. Educated men are showing that their knowledge and skill can bypass those men whose influence comes from their position rather than their training and experience. Cromwell provides a service to Cardinal Wolsey, and by extension to Henry VIII, that no one else can, and it benefits him immensely. At least, for a time. He doesn't have a particularly happy ending.

No he does not. And Mantrell's Cromwell is a different man from what from what the historians had written. Still a good show.
