[OOC][WIP] Callahan's
[OOC][WIP] Callahan's
#1
Way back in the first planning thread, we talked about adding Callahan's to the Metacontinuity. Here's a first draft of the wiki page... which I did completely from memory, so please point out any errors I made.

Welcome to Callahan's!

Open the door - the thick wooden door, split by the head of somebody being forcibly evicted (for being an asshole) and never fully repaired - and walk in. See the jukebox in the corner, its neon lights dark and its power cord cut. See the piano with the well-worn keys, and the electric guitar amp sitting beside it. See the dartboard. See the one washroom, labeled "Folks". See the bar, and see that there are a lot of quotes written on the back wall where you'd expect to see a mirror. See that you can see all this because the place is well lit.

You're at Callahan's.

And if this is all you can see, you've come at a time when nobody's in to have a drink (alcoholic or not). Be amazed, because such times are very rare.

Mike Callahan - a big man, with a heart as big as the rest of him - is usually behind the bar. Whatever you preference is, he either has it or has something close, even if he has to step into the back room for a moment to get it. He doesn't have to step into the back room to get Bushmills (or Hawaiian Kona coffee or real cream, if an Irish Coffee is your preference; although they call that drink "God's Blessing" here and serve it in a proper coffee mug). There's a "free lunch" corner at one end of the bar - with beef sandwiches that have enough meat to actually taste.

On busy nights, Tom Hauptman is behind the bar with Mike. A preacher who lost his faith when his wife died, he's found a new family among the bar's regulars.

"Fast Eddie" plays the piano - usually barrelhouse style, which he says he learned at a house of very good repute. (If he thinks you aren't the type who'll raise a fuss, he'll add that the brothel is owned and operated by Mike's wife, Sally.) Jake Stonebender plays the guitar that plugs into that amp; if he's playing on his own, he's likely playing folk. Jake and Eddie have developed a sound that's all their own, neither overpowering the other.

The clientele is mostly male, but by the time they installed the coffee maker for "God's Blessing", women in the Place were unusual but not noteworthy.

The calendar at Callahan's goes Sunday, Monday, Punday, Tall Tales Night... Audience participation on Punday and Tall Tales Night is not just encouraged, it's expected. "Doc" Webster - an actual M.D. - is usually the one who sets the pace those nights, being the regular with the most seniority. The teller of the worst pun or the tallest tale gets his bar tab refunded. (And he gets to go home with one of the more attractive female regulars, Josie Bauer, if both he and Josie are interested in such things with each other. Josie has a thing for men with a sense of humor.)

It's a merry place, most nights.

But if you've got a problem, and you want to talk about it, everything else stops and you've got the attention of everybody in the Place. (If you don't want to talk about it, and somebody starts prying... well, there's a reason why the front door was never fully repaired.) And there are a lot of smart people in the Place's regulars - and some intelligent people and some well-educated people, too.

Callahan's in the Metacontinuity

Every city with a residence has a Callahan's Place... and they're all the same place, inside. Walk in the door in San Antonio and you just might see somebody who walked in the door in Ottawa.

This doesn't mean you can use the Place as a transport medium, though. You always leave by the same door you came in - even if two people leave at the same time.

There are doors to Callahan's in other cities, too. Basically, if somebody needs to find the Place so they can talk about what's hurting their soul, they will. But curiosity seekers will have a difficult time finding the door.

This looks great, Rob.  I've honestly got to get back into reading the books so I can get into the groove for writing up proper scenes.  Ben is probably going to be a regular there.

Fun thought: some of his girls follow him there, with it being just across the street and all, curious about what all the fuss is about.  Not that they won't be unwelcome, but I'd bet it'd cause quite the reaction at first.

Other interesting ideas: Benjamin cements his place at Callahan's by properly mending the door... though he makes certain that the scars are still plainly visible, the door now hangs true.

Now, I know the folks at Callahan's don't care much for 'canned music'...

...I feel, however, there would be something to be said about having a meticulously and lovingly restored genuine Wurlitzer 850A "Tulip" Phonograph Jukebox.  Not as ostentatious as it's brother, The Peacock, The Tulip instead has a lovely painted-glass tulip mural on the front panel with a bubbler-tube for the stem - something that I think would match the aesthetics of Callahan's perfectly.  (I especially love the old fashioned coin-sliders.)

What would make it special would be that it was a symbol of Benjamin and his stepfather burying the hatchet, as it would be a restoration project the two of them would work together on - Ben's stepfather being a proficient woodworker, carpenter, and electronics technician, and Benjamin being adept at learning anything he puts his hands to.

In setting, this would probably imbue the machine with its very own sort of healing magic for the emotionally battered - it won't take away the wounds, but it would balm and dress them so a person can heal in the first place.  Also, the machine will somehow, magically, always have the perfect song in its catalog for whoever goes to the machine.

This would all be Season 2 stuff, though fixing the door could be something Benjamin does towards the end of Season 1.

Thoughts?

Oh, they could always close the door... I got the idea that the door was split as a warning: if you're deemed undesirable, there's somebody here who's strong enough to split a wooden door by throwing you through it.

And, since the draft article has been up for a day and nobody's pointed out any errors, I've copied it to the wiki.

Cool. I don't have much to comment, because I haven't read the books, don't drink, don't spend much time around bars, don't really understand the concept of drowning your sorrows, etc. But good use of second person style, Rob.

Callahan's is an atypical kinda place.  It's not really for 'drowning your sorrows' as much as 'airing your troubles'.  Alcohol tends to help a bit with that - they don't call it 'liquid courage' for nothing - but rarely do people get absolutely pickled at Callahan's unless it's for the sake of a truly rip-snorting good time.

As has been mentioned, Callahan's - unlike many many bars out there - is usually a very merry place, and also always well lit - again, unlike most other bars.

And unlike most other bars, you don't go to Callahan's so much to commiserate.  You go there to heal your soul.

So, rather than imagining a dingy, dimly lit place with mostly quiet and surly people or loud, crass exclamations, imagine instead a place where your good friends get together and talk about what weighs on them to get it off their chests, and there is always someone there to say, "Friend, I have been there."

In short, Callahan's embodies all the best aspects of the Human Spirit.

Regular faces from Westwoods:
Benjamin (natch)
Ryouko (every damn night!)
Washu-chan
Melissa Mao
Kurtz Webber
Gil Graham (once he shows up anyways)

Semi-regulars:
Shiro and Momoko Takamachi
David Bannings and Jodi Lowel (Alisa's Parents)

Pretty sure Lindy Harlaown would show up fairly regularly, too.  Callahan's is definitely her kind of place, and I could see her probably striking up a relationship with someone there.

Another fun idea for a Callahan's story: Tenchi finally gets his 'Coming of Age' party.

Benjamin, Fast Eddie, and Jake Stonebender conspire together and once Tenchi is enjoying his first drink (probably something really easy to drink like Angry Orchard) they hit him with this classic:

And whenever they get to that one immortal line in the song, everyone in the bar practically screams it: "EVERYBODY MUST! GET! STONED!"

(Really, I think this is the one song that speaks the most about America's love affair with booze more than anything else.)

From Ottawa, Rob would be a semi-regular (not a big drinker), as would Mamoru (dealing with culture shock, but he has Usagi to help him there).

Jacky and Kate might find the Place, too. They have the same problem that Tom Hauptman does: everything almost looks familiar, but so many little things are strange... and they can't go home again because they are home. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Tom and Kate struck up a friendship over shared experiences that didn't happen at the same time or place.

As for Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Rob would be shouting the line just as loudly as everybody else. (If Rob knows it's coming, he'll double-check with Eddie, Jake, and Ben, then invite Jemi along to play tenor sax. Don't ask me what Dylan sounds like on sax, but Callahan's is the place to find out.)

Ben will learn to play trombone.

Just so he can contribute, because Jake will already have the guitar part covered. And really, it wouldn't be the same without the trombone. Tenor Sax might be a good replacement for the tuba part. But having someone else on trumpet would help. Smile

We'll just need someone for percussion, and then we should be good. Wink

I actually used to play trumpet, a little bit rusty, but probably able to pull a few things off

Just as long as you're not playing the rusty trombone.
