Callahan's is an atypical kinda place. It's not really for 'drowning your sorrows' as much as 'airing your troubles'. Alcohol tends to help a bit with that - they don't call it 'liquid courage' for nothing - but rarely do people get absolutely pickled at Callahan's unless it's for the sake of a truly rip-snorting good time.
As has been mentioned, Callahan's - unlike many many bars out there - is usually a very merry place, and also always well lit - again, unlike most other bars.
And unlike most other bars, you don't go to Callahan's so much to commiserate. You go there to heal your soul.
So, rather than imagining a dingy, dimly lit place with mostly quiet and surly people or loud, crass exclamations, imagine instead a place where your good friends get together and talk about what weighs on them to get it off their chests, and there is always someone there to say, "Friend, I have been there."
In short, Callahan's embodies all the best aspects of the Human Spirit.

Another fun idea for a Callahan's story: Tenchi finally gets his 'Coming of Age' party.
Benjamin, Fast Eddie, and Jake Stonebender conspire together and once Tenchi is enjoying his first drink (probably something really easy to drink like Angry Orchard) they hit him with this classic:
And whenever they get to that one immortal line in the song, everyone in the bar practically screams it: "EVERYBODY MUST! GET! STONED!"
(Really, I think this is the one song that speaks the most about America's love affair with booze more than anything else.)
