The moment the executives at CBS decided that they wanted to try and attract a "younger demographic" and figured that grittier and edgier was the way to go.
Keep in mind, these are the same people (or at least the same breed) that killed a project to build a life-scale replica of the USS Enterprise in Las Vegas and pack it with Star Trek attractions, and only because they didn't want it to dirty their reputation should it go bad.
YEAH.
RIGHT.
You know, there was a very successful series of ST novels that fully adopted and implemented Gene Roddenberry's "Wagon Train To The Stars" pitch, with the Enterprise being the flag ship among just a mere handful of smaller Federation ships as they escort a convoy of colonists to settle in new territory.
That is something I would love to see. It would be like Star Trek meets Battlestar Galactica, except the threats, while nothing like Cylons, are much more myriad. Conmen among the colonist trying to build an empire for themselves. Two neighboring alien races at each other's throats. Natural disasters. Misunderstood higher-dimensional beings mucking around (sometimes with utterly hilarious results). Gutsy and ballsy young guns that build a scrapper of a frigate out of nothing but derelicts and spare parts.
I'd watch the shit out of that.
