The best answer to that question comes from a book the Loomis family has (or had, last time I got there) a copy of at the Michigan lake house -- Marguerite Yourcenar's Memoirs of Hadrian, in the English version by Grace Frick (the author's life-partner). In one of the imagined letters to Marcus Aurelius ("my dear Mark"), Hadrian is made to observe that, if a Christian bishop or a Mithraic photophor ever come to occupy the palace of the pontifex maximus, it won't indicate that Rome has been Christianized or Mithraicized, but rather that Christ or Mithras has been Romanized.
