Just stumbled on a potentially useful pool on Danbooru: Portrayed.

In this pool, characters are drawn in a more classical, posed style.  And more often than not, these images tend to provide a sense of what kind of people the characters are.

Safebooru link, because there's a whole LOT of (artistic) nudes in the Danbooru version.

You can search on the pool number and a series name, which removes the countless Touhou images...

For example, the pool and A Certain Magical Index returns one hit. Don't know whether we want to use that image, though.

EDIT: The pool and Tenchi returns one very nice image... and then looking at what else the artist has done turns up another very nice image.
