Part XXVII.

Thanks for closing out Maxxie's thread, Rob. But I couldn't resist adding a formal "You've Been Banned" thread.

Oh, look - another navbox, another batch of redlinks. Par for the course when we try to highlight something that isn't F&SF video.

Ah, well, at least now the horror literature fans know which "notable" books in that genre don't have writeups yet.

Is our collections of works pages for Star Trek fan works really that small?

Actually, considering how many redlinks we have for the official works, I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

If you haven't seen my rejection of his new page yet, this is a heads-up that we may need to keep an eye on the user Yardie Boy. He seems to be a small-time rapper who apparently thinks the wiki might be a good way to promote himself. Thank god for Moderation.

Ah, never mind, I see Rob has stomped him harder. How did I miss those edits that Rob undid? I apologize for letting them through.

I checked his contributions page, and noticed that he'd added descriptions to two Talk pages. (Another thing to add to the wishlist for Flow: get it to respect Moderation, at least for page descriptions.)

One-week immediate tempban for spamming.

I'd like to propose a new policy, on "requested advertising", or adding links to existing pages for other topics based on off-site requests such as via email.

I bring this up because I have gotten a few emails over the years where some slightly more ethical than usual spammers has requested we help entry-pimp their SEO ranking. Most of these I summarily ignored. On some very few occasions, I did grant one or two requests from what turned out to be legitimate disability advocates to add links to their resources on our pages for whatever disability they addressed since they were up front about their intentions, were indeed legitimately trying to help people, and our Useful Notes pages were for the purpose of information and spreading awareness of such matters.

This all said, I'd like to propose we have a formal section or even a page dedicated specifically to this issue and how we will deal with it.

Seems reasonable. We should make it clear that we will only act on requests from verifiable charities and the like, and this is not an open invite for scammers to ask us to help up their SEO, but I'm sure you were already drafting something to that effect, even if only in your head.

That sums up the gist of it. I would further narrow what is acceptable for request as being a formal request sent to our official staff contacts, with the expectation that we are under no obligation to respond to such requests, and if we do, we will make the request known to other staff and if we decide to grant it, it will be on a case by case basis for topics relevant to our wiki and/or complementary toward its mission, such as adding resources to our Useful Notes pages on how to seek help for addictions, mental illness, disability, or other directly useful information of that sort.

We will summarily reject any request we deem to be promotion of non-relevant matters or is clearly requested to bolster SEO of what would be considered advertising, such as promoting gambling websites, pornography, obviously self promotional material of no wiki value (as determined by our site mission) or any other topic that in no way furthers our mission.

I am now confused. Are you proposing allowing advertisements by charitable groups, or not?

What this means is that if the link that we are asked provide is of clear informative benefit and not just to pimp someone else's SEO, we'll give it consideration. If it's just "let me piggyback off your site to boost attention to mine" with no value to our mission, discarded on the spot.

Ah, okay. That's what we're doing already, so I have no issues with it.

If there are no objections, I'll write up a draft soon. The question is, where does it best fit? A new page for itself (likely not), or should be added as sub policy on another page.
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXVIII

I'd say as a subpoint under item 4, "We are not soapbox/advertisement space", on All The Tropes:What we aren't. And if not literally on that page, then at least we link to it from that section.

And it occurs to me that we should have waved that page/section in Yardie Boy's face a few days ago...

Is "Dark Hunter" ready for auto-moderation? They haven't made too many edits yet, but the edits have been across four months and have been good quality.

I think I'd rather wait until he has at least a dozen edits under his belt. That said, he does seem to be a good contributor and I would have no objections to promoting him when the time comes.

Rob, it looks like the change you made to at least one of the subpages modules (Subpages 2) broke the button menu.

it shouldn't have - all I did was make the list of media consistent with Subpage 6.

I've undone the change.

We have a new page in the mod queue, for a novel named 2150 A.D., submitted by Pike2023! with the edit reason "Created page with my content from Tvtropes.com." I can't go back far enough in the page history on TVT to confirm this claim. Geth, could you please check this for us, please? Thanks.

All we have lines up 1:1 with Knight20 on TV Tropes, so it looks legit. They created the page there, all our edits since creation are theirs, and their grammar is an exact match of what we have, so odds against this being ripped off, they were pretty assiduously in copying this stuff only.

New category

Feel free to populate it - I've only made it as far as Films of the 1910s, with a couple of newer films, and have barely touched animation.

Okay, we seem to have one of those users again. MarieLover aka MarieLoving aka MarieSweet is apparently not a native speaker of English and understands enough to submit subterranean-quality pages and edits, but not enough to understand simple instructions. Further, he/she appears to be doing that thing we've seen in the past where they create a new user account for practically every edit. After being warned not to. I've just threatened a multiban if they create another account just to submit yet another illegible, unusable version of "Bobby's World/Characters". Can we all keep an eye out for this one? Thanks.

Well, Moderation should be good for this. Leave a firm warning any further attempts to submit in this manner will lead to bans and their submission never being public. They ignore that, we did our fair warning, all we need do is drop hammers after like we promised.
