U.S. politician George Santos expelled from Congress

It used to be that somebody needed to commit treason to get kicked out of Congress -- 17 Congressmen were expelled for supporting the Confederacy in the early 1860s, and one was expelled for trying to incite natives to conquer West Florida for the British back in 1797.

Now all it takes is financial malfeasance.

Shows how Congress' priorities have changed between the 1860s and the 1980s.

I think you might be confusing the official formal reason with all the other reasons that added up.

Given some of the stuff congresscritters were able to get away with, I don't think this is a bad thing.

Yet, beating another politician nearly to death wasn't enough in 1856, whereas being embarrassing and a risk to the party is, apparently, enough in the 2020's.

Expulsion from Congress has never been a legal remedy. It's always been political.
