Anybody here use BitLocker?

Microsoft unlocks BitLocker for feds

Quote:Last year, Redmond reportedly provided the FBI with encryption keys to unlock the laptops of Windows users charged in a fraud indictment.

The government case [PDF], which claims defendants in Guam fraudulently collected pandemic unemployment benefits, represents the first publicly known instance of Microsoft providing BitLocker keys, according to Forbes.

Workaround: Don't save your keys to your Microsoft Account, your OneDrive, or any other service controlled by Microsoft.

That seems like a basic security precaution, rather than a workaround, though? Why would anyone store their keys om a cloud service to begin with? A thumb drive that can be unplugged any time you don't actively need them sounds like a much better idea anyway...

It is a better idea, yes. Microsoft has set "save the key to the cloud" as the default, so it has to be changed manually.

Ah. Another one of those "Fuck the user experience, we're pushing our live service vision of the monetized future!" moments, then.

I recently switched to Linux, running the KDE desktop environment, and it's been largely a good experience. Once I got the initial set of bugs worked out -- basically installing the correct drivers for the graphics card -- it's been great. It feels like my computer is actually mine again.
