[RFC] Al's Wait & Eat

Al's Wait & Eat

Al's is a curious establishment. His target customer base is Transferred Consciousnesses like Wave Convoy, and other Infomorphs with a highly developed awareness of human senses. While he does have a normal eat-in seating area (why turn away business?) what inspired him to open his diner was the accidental creation of his Culinary Scanner: a device that takes whatever foodstuff is put into it and creates a holoprogram that mimics it perfectly, down to its relationship with time and environment. This program can be paused (it always arrives fresh and hot, and leftovers keep forever) and adjusted to match the customer's temporal awareness, but it refuses to run from the same point in time more than once.

As befits his position as leader of his local Slow Food Convivium (read: Chapter), Al refuses to sell the same meal twice or make a stockpile of holo-dishes: every meal is made to order and near as possible from scratch. This means that service is always excruciatingly slow from an Infomorph's perspective, but also that the food is always fresh, delicious, and subtly different from the last time you had it.

Staff Quirks:
Dedicated Roleplayer: The only people to see Al in person on a regular basis are the other members of his Convivium. He otherwise lives in Cyberspace where his avatar is a One Binome. He spends so little time interacting with people offline that rumour has it he's an Infomorph himself. He isn't, but he's so thoroughly wired that a biomod will probably Transfer him into a Binome chassis.
Dumb Waiter: Al is the only intelligent member of the staff: all other staff (which look like One and Zero Binomes) are cleverly designed and highly complex, but have a rigid if-then-else decision tree. If business is slow and one of his regulars comes in, then Al might seize control of a waiter-bot to take care of them "personally".

Heee. Reboot fen! That's so sprockin' alphanumeric! Wink
Oh, here's another quirk:
Say What?: Al gets so engrossed in what he's doing in the kitchen that you often have to repeat what you say.  This is often accompanied by the prerequisite, disembodied 'WHAAAT?' that comes from the kitchen.

That happens more frequently when he's "playing Waiter", of course: dividing attention between the kitchen and the people leads to a few dropped packets now and then.

Big Grin We've HAD them in Fenspace already, even if it's a throwaway ref in the Gazetteer's "Places to Eat" section.

"It is a really nice place to go if you want to do some random chat with a few friends online, while enjoying something to eat.

Its true that it takes forever until the dishes are ready, but at least this means you are not in a hurry to leave again. I sometimes wonder if the scanner destroys the food that is digitized or if Al will enlarge his business one day into a dual-world restaurant, where physical people and AIs can enjoy a meal together.

And of course there is the fun to watch the small waiters to run around and try to guess their decision tree. Its a nice touch to provide this kind of subtle amusement for an AI restaurant. Unfortunately most Transferred Consciousnesses customers don't get the game, but on the other side they are enjoying the meal even more."

Hmmmm....

There's already technology out there in Fenspace which can induce false sensations in people's minds, right?

Who's to say the only AI's and ghost-conversions have to be the only customers? There's got to be some way of implimented SR-style Simsense stuff for the foods you'd think would be too lethal to try otherwise? Want fugu without the risks, for example?

The Culinary Scanner does consume its input, but even if it didn't, Al wouldn't serve the same dish to an infomorph and a meat-person: that would fall under "selling the same meal twice". If an AI and a biological person want to sit down to dinner together, they have to either both come to Al's realspace location (with the AI driving a bio-chassis so that they can partake) or share a VR session.

As for risk-free fugu, Al won't sell someone else's holoprogram or simsense data, and the CS refuses to scan anything with excessive levels of any toxin on the basis that it has ceased to be food.
