It was a natural thing when you look at it in retrospect.  Benjamin is many things, and one of the least well known ones is that he's a trainspotter.  No, not in the sense you're probably thinking.  Benjamin studied the ways and lifestyles of the railroaders of Old Earth - the United States of America in particular.  (We dare you to ask him about the lifestyles of railroad workers at the turn of the 20th Century - he'll go on about the romance and hardships.)  And once Gina whispered this fact into Maetel's ear she knew exactly where to go.
Therefore, Black Aeronaut was a natural choice for Galaxy Railways to contract for the construction of a new fleet of locomotives.  Of course, Maetel insisted they each have a unique look and be steam-powered, and Benjamin honestly had no problem with that.  What she got, though... well, let's just say she should have expected it.  It is Benjamin Rhodes we're talking about here, and if he does one thing really good it's make things go fast... and that's just while they're sitting still.

And yet, you neglect The world's fastest steam locomotive. She'll make .126C for a short burst, so long as you don't mind the main bearings starting to overheat.

Steam-powered streamliners in general (I'm tempted to call them "steamliners") tend to have that spaceworthy look.

Anyhow, yeah.  Throw that one into the bunch.
But for her speed, I don't see her hauling a whole lot of stuff.  The Mallard only had a tractive effort (pulling force) of 35,455 lbf (157.7 kN).  The Pennsylvania Railroad's T-1 Class was a real powerhouse, pulling at 58,300 lbf (259.3 kN).  In fact, if an engineer at the throttle of a T-1 wasn't careful, he could cause a violent wheel slip - even while traveling as fast as 100 mph (161 kph), thus damaging the poppet valves in the main cylinders.  They were also described as 'free steaming', meaning they were able to maintain boiler pressure no matter what the throttle was set to.  Theoretically, you could have the throttle wide open and she'd never run out of steam so long as the tender's supply of coal and water held out.

Cool. I can imagine that one's AI having a very grim personality, yet with a delightfully dry sense of humor.

Lessee, personas for the others...

The Empire State and the 20th Century will be brothers, since they're essentially both streamlined Hudsons.

The Cincinnatian should have a cold and almost otherworldly persona.

The S-1 and T-1 are Older Sister and Younger Brother respectively. The Sister will have all the grace, poise, and charm of a debutante... up until you cheeze her off, then she turns downright surly. Her brother is strength, personified. As unyielding as tempered steel, yet he'll spare kind words for someone that needs them.

Anyone else got any other suggestions for trains to add?

Indeed. It's pretty sad that they no longer strive for any aesthetic appeal in heavy industry now. Fortunately, you have enterprising souls in Fenspace that wish to change that. Smile
So, who was it that was in charge of Maetel and Galaxy Railways? Does this meet with your approval?

Griever hasn't been around for a while, and didn't reply when I sent him chapter 3 of LoGG for pre-reading, so I doubt approval is forthcoming... but I doubt rejection is forthcoming, either.

I suspect we might want a consensus (or a Word of Mod) on what to do with the toys left behind by folks who've lost interest in Fenspace...

Actually BA... come to think of it, I have a bunch of Model Loco's in 00 scale kicking around here. If you'd like, I could take some pictures for you. They're mostly Euro, but there're a few American ones in there too I think. It's worth a look in any rate, if you'd like some ideas.

I suggest that orphaned elements of Fenspace (characters, places, and things whose authors left Fenspace without explicitly declaring them "open") be considered "moderated" or some similar term, basically meaning "open, but use subject to greater (possibly more formalized) scrutiny by the Collective than open items usually are".
