The name's generic, so I'm guessing it's not anybody here. Could be a spammer. We'll see what they edit & how they edit it.

(And if any of you guys see something, let me know ASAP so I can block that user/IP)

We've got another one - "Bruno914624".

Same IP as "Donald635603", by any chance?

Hm, looks like a wave of spambots is passing through. Both accounts are blocked and so are their IPs.

... Anyone think we should apply a new layer to the registration process? Like a requirement for approval from the mods/admin?

Good idea, if the software will support it. (Although right now the only mod is Mal... how much work do you want?)

If not, perhaps an authentication token? "Your account request has been received. To complete the creation of your account, enter the key that has been posted to reply number ## of the thread "[META] New FenWiki Accounts" on the forum. Finding the forum is a test to ensure you aren't a spambot." (The Fenspace Forum is already linked from the FenWiki, after all...)

Me and my big mouth.

So, where's the instruction manual? (Or should I just experiment? )

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki for all your instruction manual needs.

Short form, now you've got rights to delete/restore pages and block & unblock users. At least you *should* If I've read this thing correctly.

In theory the email confirmation works as an auth token - in fact I'm pretty sure it did, since none of the spammer accounts edited any pages so all they ended up doing was clogging up the user list.

Still, I'm looking into some options for setting up a confirmation queue. What I've seen so far would work, but it might require digging deeper into the wiki than I'm comfortable with, so we'll see.

Might be a good idea to simply disable account creation for a while. It's not like a real person is likely to come out of nowhere and join the wiki, after all.

Done. I can create accounts, and Rob *should* be able to create accounts, but that's it.

Well, I got block/unblock rights, but I didn't get delete/restore rights... but I did get the ability to promote myself into a group that has delete/restore rights, so I have them now. (Bwah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hack-gasp-cough...)

We'll find out later (when the need arises) whether I can.

I've added this to the Help page: '''If you want a FenWiki account''', ask on the Fenspace forum. If you're a contributing member of the Fenspace Collective, you'll probably get one.

It's funny... there was someone in the IRC channel yesterday who was asking questions about getting involved. He came in from Spacebattles after seeing Fenspace mentioned in some sigs.

He said he's found the forum, and has been reading through chunks of it. He knows it's here for sure.

Mm. Given that I still have posting restricted to members to keep the spammers out, he won't be able to ask for wiki membership until he asks for forum membership... maybe I ought to change that.

He just registered on the forums actually (HRogge I think). He told me in the IRC chatroom about an hour ago.

I'd rather leave things the way they are - the current setup lets folks take part in the back-and-forth here (and get a feel for the setting) before they can try to do something on their own in the FenWiki. But that's just my opinion; what does everyone else think?
